Read in the paper today the nsw state gov are trying to get 30km/h speed limits instigated for suburban street and school zones.
There going to vote on the issue and if it is passed will send the details of the idea to the roads minister. What a joke. Soon we will be better off just walking!

I drive down two permanent 40km/h suburban streets on my way to work each morning (both near schools). It is very hard to actually drive at 40km/h. From a rolling start my SV8 seems to idle faster than this in top gear. I need to pull it back a few gears to slow it down to 40!!
BTW: I am usually the *ONLY* persons doing 40km/h in these zones each morning .. all the other people doing 60km/h+ are the local residents of these areas. I see them pull out of the driveways and sidestreets. If I hit one of their kids doing 60km in that street I'd be declared a maniac and menace, but they think it's OK for them to "speed"(??) .. |

Yet another case of too many people employed to make rules with nothing constructive to do. I'm sure if not another rule was made for the next ten years we would still be able to survive.
30km/hr? For what! Educate people that cars have right of way on streets. 30km/hr at school crossings - yes - but suburban streets? |

Great. Our last premier used to make road rules, even though he doesn't have a drivers licence. He just uses chauffers.
Seems to be the thinking that they stuffed up public transport, then they force people to use it by making roads unusable through lack of maintenance, revenue cameras and then legislation. I hope this all comes out before March next year when these d1ckheads are trying to get re-elected. Useless scumbags.

Wow. That's slow. Seeing as SA tends to follow in NSW's footsteps... a lot of the time, this is a good thing. Let's hope this one doesnt catch on.

Oh nice work this is. Where is KEEPLEFT on this topic.
How about you give us your view on it? I think this sucks. 30KPH eay. Well i can go faster on a pushbike. Soon you wont be able to go anywhere. Example: 70 down to 40 is bad enough. Yet on the left hand side there is nothing but a cliff down to the Blackbut Reserve. Right handside the school has its own road seperate yet its still a school zone ? and no crossing |

In relation to the 30km/h, I'll seek information. You might recall WA discussion of similar recently. My view is that it will not happen here. ONE of the results of NSW road safety summits was the fact there are too many speed limits per kilometre.

So if I travel only through 60k zones now to get to work, it will take double the amount of time to get to work.... and the ease of accidentaly getting over 30kph... it's just to easy... the car doesn't even start making noise till past that point.... It's got to be the dumbest thing I have heard of.
I say let them put all the 60kph, 50kph, and 40kph streets to 30kph and then will will see how many MP's speeding in bus lanes. It's bad enough slowing down from 100/110 down to a 60 zone... imagine 110 down to 30 - just stupid.... My AU can stop from 60kph bloody quickly without locking the wheels. I reackon a better idea is to legally lower the speed limit on wet days.... Now that I can throw my full support behind....

So by your assertion you're telling me that the numerous interviews he has had talking about school zones, flashing lights, the cross city tunnel and what he was going to do about it all; he was merely speaking out of term was he?
And I suppose revenue (speed) cameras just miraculously appeared one day without his knowledge and/or OK.

Actually keepleft, can you tell me what the deal is with all of the traffic lights in NSW being changed to the LED type? I mean, we have no money for lights outside schools but we can change all of the working incandescant lights to the LED type. Is there some kind of kickback scheme going on?
The reason I say this is that in NSW whenever anything is done there is normally a hell of a lot of media spin put on it, and as far as I know there is no mention of it in the media whatsoever.

Don't you people get it?? If you reduce the speed limit 30km/h, you'll almost halve the amount of accidents!!
If the highway is reduced to 50km/h, well have half the road deaths! What a great idea!!

hahaha looks like QLD really is the smart state cause all i ever hear is every other state doing something stupid like that...
now i no its only for safety because of a few idiots who need to be shot (and maybe the gov needs more money) but i think its more dangerous making people look at their speedo to see whether they are doing the right speed instead of watching the road.. i no this for fact an thats doing that stupid 40k through school zones

At 30kph it'd be amlost quicker riding a bike or walking. 40kph in school zones is bad enough here in Vic but it's doable. 30kph would be pretty difficult to maintain.
Who in a car park sticks to the 10-20kph limit? Just an example? I think of this is just another way to make revenue. I'd find it ironic if the people making these laws don't even drive themselves.

I personally don't take issue with this around schools, but suburban streets is taking it too far. I drop my kids off at Primary school every morning and find it shocking how fast even some stupid parents of these kids drive around the school with 5-10 year old children running everywhere.

Wow, car is still in 1st gear at that speed, also cruise control wont work until ya hit 40 - does this indicate how slow 30 is? fuel economy at that speed will suck, and it will be a damn boring drive - people will sit on 15km/h so they dont get booked...
My theory: When the lowest limit was 60 speeding fines reduced and they brought out 50 limits, and booked more people for travelling over 50 cos people werent used to it. People got used to doing 50, slowed down, fines dropped down, need to increase revenue introduce 40 zones - fines increase, then people get used to it then slow down even more..... 30 zones??? |

I'm not 100% sure but on our news last night it was just one council (Ashfield) that wanted the 30kph zones. As for QLD laughing at other states, you have 50kph zones too you know just like us. Don't you have 40kph school zones too? And as for your road toll I'd like to see some proof that yours is so much better than anyone elses.

The law has always required you to be at the limit at point of the sign, no such thing as a 'transition' allowance. Quote:
Quote:
NOW, insofar as LED speed limit signs to signal 'school zones' (or other specialist zones), becomes another 'administrative' matter altogether. Much more involved in say school zones where issues such as 'times of day as applicable', 'the actual limit' which may need to vary with time, AND the ability to call up the sign from a central control point is desirable in 'speed managment'. To this managerial extent, RTA in NSW have now called for TENDERS from companies for the supply, maintenance and operations of the speed signs, see here: Final Report (April 2006) into School Zone flashing lights. http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/roadsafety...ights_2006.pdf AND the TENDER call for NSW LED flashing speed limit signs for School zones: http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/doingbusin...272018403.html Quote:
Quote:
CHANCE of this becoming a new NSW "built-up area default"??? NIL, and you can bank on that. Yes, it is possible a Council might implement 30km/h 'zones' in some busy 'spots', BUT ONLY if here in NSW - RTA's 'Speed Zoning Guidelines' are made to allow so. Chance of this? Not taken seriously for now. |

My post was directed more at FALCONSR as he was the one who seemed to be taking the P155 out of other states when his state has mostly the same rules. Not only that he thinks 40kph through a school zone is stupid. I should have put his quote in my post my appologies.
