Model designations:

The first 3 speak for themselves.
The 5T being the Focus and the 4 is Fiesta IIRC.

When it comes to car designations, not much of it makes much sense, regardless of the manufacturer.

It means ford is Xtra dumb for naming another model afteR an older model with the same initials. Twice. Its so annoying when searching for cars or parts.

GL=GrandeLux - it's Eurospeak for grand luxury. Doesn't mean much as it's applied to the base model??? Bit like Commode Executive LOL

Maybe it's not meant to mean anything, just a good-sounding nameplate that Tickford thought of at the time when it started with the EB, something to rival the Commodore S Pack and SS.

XR stands for Xrta Rude. This is to condition you for the attitude you can expect from a lot of Ford Service Centres.

XR was the model of the first Falcon GT. It is generally recognised as the forefather of all sporting Fords built since then. Also popularly thought of as the Grandaddy of all Aussie Muscle cars.

When Ford re-introduced a dedicated "sports" model back into it's range in 1992 the marketing boffins thought it would get them some value by calling them XR to rekindle the heritage - Falcon XRs (90s models) also returned to the formerly (on Falcon) "high-perf" only set-up of a four-headlight front end. This has always been seen as an "icon" on Ford sports models.

So XR is not representing anything except nostalgia basically.

Get over it mate,I think you will find the name XR was used out of respect for the original.

Correct you are sir!

Mercury Cougar XR7.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_Cougar
This wiki does make mention of the XR7, but does not state what the XR stands for.

I think they would have borrowed the designation from Europe, although it was first used on the Cougar XR7. Probably need to find out what the Europeans thought it stood for.

Marketing; X has always been a good letter to get you looking. GT, R-spec, XR, P, etc etc. Names are just made up with a token effort to resemble the model etc. As llong as it sounds good and helps sell.
The Falcon XR though, may have more meaning as mentioned above.

Well that was a worthwhile contribution

I always thought the XR (Tickford) was a copy from the British Fords.

In Europe, Ford had the Sierra XR4i, Escort XR3i, and Fiesta XR2i...as has been said, XR doesn't stand for anything, it's a designation...
