The pricing I saw for a near map license was crazy money

I was shocked at what Near Map had done...it's the exact same way a drug dealer works..."The first few tastes are free my friend...but once you're hooked, then I start charging!"

My niece's partner flies over Melbourne, geelong and sydney doing the mapping stuff - not sure if it's for near map, but I'd guess it is. He gets paid so they need to generate fees somehow.

if they made a personal licence that was affordable id imagine lots would sign up - instead they just cut them out?

Agree totally.. It's a fantastic site (and really useful, especially for measurements etc)
I'd gladly pay a 100 or so a year, but 6 grand is just bloody ridiculous!

Yep... exactly what I used it for too... Swimming pool placement and even planned out most of the landscaping once the house frame was positioned on the block.
Was also interesting watching our house go from a bare paddock thru to completion. Apparently the solar panel guys love it to map out available roof space.

We used it for work (doing solar panels ahaha) and yeah the other week all of a sudden you had to pay for it. If you ask me, it was a **** cunning business move. If you think of it, everyone is using it for free and becomes dependent on it, then all of a sudden needs to pay for it. We had to pay $5000 for five yearly licences pretty much immediately because otherwise we couldn't do our job properly.
I hear it's quite popular with builders and architects as well. anyone know if Nearmap is a publicly listed company? last week the share price would have gone through the roof..

It was free for "PERSONAL USE" businesses were abusing the licence, especially solar installers, when they should have been paying for it in the first place.

It's come in handy for me quite often as a landscaper, so I too went and looked up the pricing and I too nearly died lol
I don't blame them for charging though, as it wouldn't be cheap to regularly update aerial photographs. Just wasn't expecting it to be so high!

I know that this is an old thread so save your stupid thread mining jokes for something else.
I got this email two days ago, has anyone else received it yet? I still feel like telling them to shove it as a matter of principle but at least it’s a step in the right direction. http://comms.info.nearmap.com/index....dst6EPXA%3D%3D

It’s the way they went about it. Letting everyone view it free for years then having the audacity to charge $6000 a year to view what we’d been seeing for nothing. To me, they are like a bunch of drug dealers. Give you the stuff for free and when you’re hooked, whammmo. If they let people have a short trial from the get go then charged a fee for ongoing use, that would have been a different situation. They probably would have kept a lot of people onside. Even though it’s a fantastic site, they can still shove it up their Khyber. My bet is that the money from the councils and other corporate clients must have dried up, otherwise why would they be doing this after two years?

Blah... I hope nobody pay's and they relinquish and go back to offering it for free like they 1'st did, surly they can gain their investment via other means like other free websites do, if they are so much better then google earth then people will browse and the traffic will jump and so will company's that will want to advertise with them etc...No different to how Facebook and likes work.

Yep, Our local Council called them in to take pics of the Wagga Floods a few years ago, you could clearly see oil trails from the cars in the used car yards.
If you were/are growing naughty plants in your back yard you wouldn't like Nearmap One of the problems they had when it was free was that there were a LOT of Solar Panel installers using it as a cheap way to quote jobs.

I've never used nearmap but there is one for NSW called SIX maps. Its run by the NSW Government that is heaps better than Google from the air plus they are in the process of combining current aerial photos with historic photos from as long ago as the 1940s, so you will be able to see how much the area has changed.
Here is the link http://maps.six.nsw.gov.au/ |

Intramaps is pretty good. Probably not as upto date as nearmaps, but much better than google.
PLUS contains zoning, lot numbers, etc. Only thing is, as far as I can figure out, your local council has to be a subscriber: http://www.mapsolutions.com.au/intra...ps-public.aspx |
