Default Thumbs up for Amazon

Hey guys, just like to give some positive experience with the online retailer Amazon from the USA. I bought a pair of Caterpillar "Endure" steel capped boots from them, the prices are very good and they only took 6 days to go from America to my door with the normal international shipping option.

Thats them there, set me back $150 AUD all up.

Probably exceeds Australian standard but it doesn't match it.

Nice boots.
"these boots are made for workin,
and thats just what they'll do
they might not meet the standards
but at that price they will do."

You know the tune.

Or if you drop something on your boot and they do an investigation. They fines are rather nasty.

The came onto the market a few years ago and quite a number of sheep in the mining industry bought them in from the states. Cue someone in OH&S found out and went to town on everyone. Laughs all round. Merikan OH&S standards are a lot less than Australian. You can can get a very good set of Australian boots for around $120.

There are a few imports here that do meet the standard but most imported from the US don't.

I have a pair of Hard Yakka boots which are very comfy and steel toed, but they're all worn out on the inside and the sole is starting to wear away, they where my only pair of shoes up until a few weeks ago when I finally got myself some dress shoes, lol.

They wouldn't let me wear them at TAFE because apparently they arent "safety boots" because they have mesh on them instead of full covered in leather. They set me back $130 too.

I would have bought them again but I thought I'd give Caterpillar a go, I saw some in a local shoe shop, except they only had two different types, they where suede looking ones which I don't like and they where $230. So I got better ones from USA cheaper.

I'm looking at bringing in some DeWALT power tools soon as well, they are so much cheaper in the USA than they are here. The only thing I'm trying to work out is if I can buy a battery charger by itself here thats 240V, so I can charge the batteries from my power point, or I just get the 12V car charger.

Also if I can ship batteries internationally.

Cutters for my Phillips XL razor, part number HQ 9, are $41 shipped to Australia from Amazon. To buy them here is $89..There is no justification for 100% mark up..Phillips Australia is ripping us off !!!

They actually meet the ISO standard from which Australia takes it standards. These are the same as are available from Westrac on order. You just pay more for them.

I had these on mine sites many times, and never had a hassle with OH&S, even the OH&S manager bought a pair, but personally I prefer the Mack boots. Personally found both Cat and Mack boots survive better and more comfortable than the others I have tried.

A lot of the boots available in Australia are Asian made, but still have to comply with ISO.

Also checked with a friend at Westrac, the name in Australia is "Foundation" as Endure is already in use. The price is $225 Aus.

I've had great experience with amazon too, bought a Harley leather jacket, a couple of years back. It arrived within 7 days, (from a Harley dealer in the states) at less than half the price they were in the bike shops in Oz, including freight, duties, etc.

tools are like cars but i hate dewalt.
i only buy hitachi.
anyway you are right to import the tools but you dont need to buy a new charger.
the charger you get will cater from 110v to 240v so you will just need to change the plug.
ive done it to a mac book charger when i bought one from overseas and it works fine.
one other small thing is that the colours of the wires will be different so maybe a sparkie on the forum will be able to tell you what colours to where on an aussie plug.

good luck

Just bought a heap of fantastic BBC Bluray documentaries from Amazon UK, like the "Life" with 4 Blurays for ~15 pound (24 dollars) here its $90 in JB Hifi, bought a heap for presents. Great stuff!
Spend 120 pounds, including 16 pound postage for what would cost aus$600+ at JBHifi!

Yeah, they seem to be alright with small tools like cordless drills, etc. I just bought myself some 10.8V DeWALT drill and impact driver kit from Bunnings a few weeks back, set me back $400 for the kit, Amazon.com has the 18V versions for less than half the price >:(

I was looking into an air compressor but they won't ship things like that outside of the USA (plus shipping would be huge), or engine oil and filters either it seems. There are services like shipto and stuff like that who purchase on your behalf and then ship to overseas, etc but its an added cost I supposed.

Excellent, might have to pick up some 18V Li-Ion ones for some tools I'll be getting soon ;)

I used to buy a few dvd's and cd's off Amazon, haven't done so for about five years now though. Was all stuff unavailable in Australia at the time.

Always arrived no problems at all. Also, I used to get it delivered to my work address as I worked in the mailroom there so would get the package without having to line up behind everyone paying bills at the post office!

Nice boots. Great price... BUT

Parity = Awesome for consumers.

Parity = A slow death for Australian retailers

Parity = A kick in the guts for th economy...

Maybe we could all support Australian businesses. Just a thought.

Maybe when a a lot of Aussie retailers stop robbing us blind they'll see this 'support'. Like a lot of people now, I bring in some products from the USA. There's no reason that retailers here should be charging the prices they do. Fair enough when our dollar was at USD$0.65 but not when 1:1.

With some of my 4WD gear, Ring & Pinions for example, I can get the same product shipped to my door from the US for around $200 - $230. Here the same Ring & Pinion costs $400 - $450. Would a retailer who needs my support like to explain that to me please?

Check out www.booko.com.au

Will make you cry when you see what you can get somet hings delviere to your door for as opposed to the "battling" Australian retailers.

Check out Jamie Olvier Ministry of Food. Delivered from the UK...$31.88.....from the ABC Bookshop...$74.95

I support my wallet. If it's cheaper somewhere else, I'll buy it. That's what it boils down to...

I wouldn't mind supporting Australian retail sector if they stopped robbing us blind on electronics, power tools, and everything else you can buy in a store, $110 AUD for a new PS3 game or $60 USD? You tell me.

Unfortunately Amazon won't ship a lot of power tools to here in Australia, they will ship me things like portable worklights and certain batteries, but not 90% of the stuff I want, I have to go through other retailers and they want MASSIVE amount for shipping.

Amazon.com shipping to Australia is very cheap compared to these other guys who also sell through Amazon, this is annoying, I want more than the portable work light haha.

I might look into one of those forwarding services.
