Ok, so my car is intermittnely seemingly firing on 5 cylinders. Can be on idle, load, or WOT.
It all happened after I serviced the car, this is what I done: Oil and oil filter Ported Throttlebody Cleaned the PCV Used a bottle of Stop leak as my engine has more oil coming out of it then my wifes hair Degreased it, and hosed it (very quickly, like I do every oil change, and not the engine, just the front of the block, and back). So what could I possibly have done? I just checked the plugs, they were really grotty, and fouled, cleaned them, inspected the leads which are perfect, and still running crap. If I go to accelerate hard, it will go: Brrrrrmmpopmmmpopmmmmpopopopommm. Also does the same when Im stalling up, like it has Anti lag, lol What have I done, and what can I do to fix it?

Well as you said to me previously it started after a degrease I am still convinced its something simple..

either that or its just rooted leads. I had a pair of leads on my AU1 that looked perfect but one just would fire only intermittently. Just slap in a new set of plugs, failing that new leads failing that new coilpack.

Water in coilpack +1, happened to a mates corolla one arvo and it took us ages to figure it out!

Coilpack is sealed so impossible to get water in it.
I'd say faulty plugs - replace with new.

Replace the plugs and / or leads +1. My pulsar did the exact same thing a couple years ago. Was still barely driving but had no guts to it. Never hurts to have new plugs anyway.
How long have they been on there for?

Wrong motor remove the 5 cylinder out and install a 6 cylinder 4litre that should fix it.Try wd over the coil packs,and if you removed lead check firing order.

what JC said, and sometimes old leads fail after being removed, after you drown every thing with wd40 or crc if its still no good if your game, pull one lead off a plug by the boot at a time with insulated multigrips while the engine is running till you find which cylander makes no difference , once you know which cylander is not working, swap 2 plugs around, if the dodgey cylander has moved you know it was the plug.

beat me to it Mik, i was going to suggest that. don't be worried if you don't have insulated multi grips or similar, you can pull the leads of plugs without them while the car is running without fear of electrocution lol. although if you do get jumped its quite a jolt

Ok, leads are perfect, they arent very old, and I didnt take them off, except for yeaterday. Its only intermittent (ie: not theere 100% of the time), goes away after 4000ish RPM.
I didnt spray any water at all on the coilpack side, oil leak is coming from the cam tensioner. Im starting to think its plugs though, even though I cleaned them, it made no difference, but they are in pretty bad shape.

Hey, i had similar symptoms on both my old EF and my au fairlane. In both cases it was the coil packs.
The EF was worst, like if you tried to take off from a roundabout it would feel like it was on the verge of stalling, no power what so ever, but would disappear higher in the rev range. I have a spare coil pack sitting round if need be. Send me a pm if interested.... |

Well, I actually developed a problem about a year ago, at the drags. It seems to tie in together, but didnt really think it did.
If I load it up in 4th, (d) at 60km/h and then back off, coast, and nail it, it just splutters until it gets back to 1st or 2nd, almost to the point of dying. It also backfires a little, which can sound very interesting. Thanks for that MattyB, On the weekend, Ill try swapping plugs and leads with our other AU and if that doesnt work, Ill try the coilpacks.

Well, the 5 cylinder part is all fixed.
Cost about $27. Was the plugs. Add massive LOL to the end of this sentence.
