Illegal Mobile Speed Camera Revealed (Vic)

Following on from Redrum's topic I thought I'd throw this one up (more for the interest of the Victorians here) but I'd be interested to hear thoughts from people in other states especially if you know if there are similar laws regarding camera positioning there.

I've seen some pretty sneaky things going on here in South East Queensland and I've often heard people mention "they can't set-up there" but I haven't seen any actual documentation to that effect.

car advice need a pat on the back. not sure what the rules say for s.a.

some argue that if the camera isn't hidden then speedsters will just slow down and then speed up again once past.

others argue that if the camera IS hidden, then speedsters don't even know they've been done and continue on speeding.

surely if one method gets the motorist to slow, even if only for a short period of time, it is more effective than the other.

they always hide in the bushes and position on hills here in s.a.

another question i've always wondered. is it illegal to park in front of a speed camera, provided you are legally parked? obviously you'd set yourself up for extra scrutiny.

A few years ago I pointed out to a senior traffic policeman in Victoria that the privately operated speed cameras were parking along side double white lines and booking sppeding motorists, whilst I have no issue with them booking speeders, they need to be inside the law themselves. They have subsequently painted out the double white lines with black paint right where the speed camera car parks, and only for the length of the car parked - LOL

On that motorbike U-tube bit - isn't it true that a copper must show the speed gun to you if you request to see the alleged speed you were doing?

This would not be possible if the copper in the trees was just radioing to his colleague up the road.

As a biker - I would be demanding both coppers' names and numbers and then would definitely be taking the fines to court.

What about the speed camera article (I cant remember which state) in which they were going to introduce them installed in a wheelie bin??

Surely this is a "hidden" camera..... and not visible to the motorist.
But then one wonder will they have someone parked nearby just incase someone attempts to steal the bin???

AFAIK, the policy has no force at law and it is misleading to state that the mobile speed camera is 'illegal'.

The law requires that the mobile units are operated according to, amongst other things instructions approved by the testing officer. (SS 34 & 40 Road Safety (General) Regulations 2009)

According to this site, http://www.trafficlaw.com.au/Speed_cameras.html, these instructions do not refer to the policy. [Mr Hardy refers to the previous regulations, but the wording is essentially the same.]

No, they do not have to show you the reading, even if you ask for it... in fact, they don't even need a reading to book you - they can estimate your speed just watching you drive by and book you on that basis.

SA has some in wheelie bins I believe - they use them in the Adelaide Hills and along Gorge Road.

I also remember travelling up the Sturt Highway on Easter Thursday about two years ago, a late model commodore parked on the side of the highway half way down a hill. Back window of the car full of pillows, toys and sleeping bags and speed camera and operator installed in the front!!

But it's not revenue raising - it's about slowing people down (6 weeks later)

And no - i wasn't speeding....

Recently I was coming back from Adelaide and spotted a traffic patrol car sitting in the middle on the down side of hill near Adelaide. As an old truckie, I thought "you *****, that would be right", and sure enough, right on cue he pulls out after a truck

Tell me how a hidden speed camera is going to stop someone having an accident ?
By sending you a bill 3 to 4 weeks later ? dont think so

Revenue for 08/09 was 300 odd million dollars for Victorian Speed Camera's

But if you cut that out where ells is the goverment going to get its money ? hmmm tax this tax that

There's always one.

Yes you shouldn't speed, but it happens, momentary lapse in concentration, overtaking and realise that the car coming towards you is a bit closer then you thought, hell even coming down a hill you can pick up 10km/h or more

I travel the GV and Hume Highways twice a week to Melbourne and return, I always sit on the speed limit as determined by the speed over distance button on the Fords, or 'average km/h', which is more accuate than the speedo.

It is interesting to note how many people with NSW number plates pass me abviously a fair bit above the limit, they are obviosuly unaware of the different restrictions down here.

And also how many Victorians speed past then slow down for the permanent camera's olong the freeway. These camera's record your speed point to point, so slowing down for them is a little pointless as they record your speed between the 2 locations, mind you they do have have fixed speed camera's there as well.

None of these in Queensland yet to my knowledge, but these will be the ones that catch more and more people in my opinion. Of all the speed camera types out there these would have to be the best deterrent on any given stretch of road to try to get people to stick to the speed limit but like all cameras if someone desperately wants to go faster they will do it outside of these zones.

Average speed cameras are on the Bruce Highway, Caloundra Road to Wild Horse
Mountain, Beerburrum i think they may still be in testing though?

According to the traffic cop who attended a 4x4 club meet late last year, if they use a radar gun and you request to see the reading, they are bound to show you - if they refuse it is a reportable offence and you should take down their details and make a formal complaint...
