Default What problems have you had with your Mondeo?

Seeing this question has been asked of the FG Falcon wouldn't it be nice to know if there are significant/consistent problems with Ford's FWD alternative?

A lot of electrical, wiring and computer faults.
All repairable but very time consuming.
We get at least one Mondeo a week that's in for at least another weak for diagnosis/repair.

Thanks Jimmy,
Traditionalists (RWD) (I do it both ways) might end up with the Mondeo/Fusion unless the 'enemy' is still avbl....it just seems like it might be inevitable seeing Ford are saying nothing to allay fears for the Falcon's future.

Hi Jimmy

I am wondering if you can expand on what you mean by "Alot of electrical, wiring and computer faults"

I have an early MA Zetec, which was purchased in 2010 as an ex demo. In that time, i have had to replace each rear tail light globe 4 to 5 times each. And just the other day, the centre break light appeared to only light approx 80% of that bar. Battery was replaced just on 2 years ago.

I love it how the Mondeo has a sensor for everything, just wondering if they tried to get to smart for there own good.

thanks

Sean

Both my cigarette lighter socket and the power socket in the back of the centre console have decided not to have power anymore.

Probably just a fuse but I'll let the dealer sort that out in a couple of weeks at next service.

I think that's what terrifies a lot of drivers of old Fords, the Falcon is enough of a worry even NA ones.

Had a few minor trim issues, all covered by warranty. Major problem was battery going flat, and RAC was unable to fix, had to get towed to dealer to fix.

Other than that no other issues.

A battery getting to the end of its life seems to cause all sorts of electronic problems!

A few in the last few years but nothing mechanical.

1. Faulty driver's seat-belt sensor (whole buckle replaced under warranty). Front passenger's side seems to be playing up now
2. Faulty cruise control (could not be fixed when car was under warranty as fault could not be reproduced). Still works 99% of the time. The 1% requires me to usually turn off the engine and restart it for it to start working again.
3. Parking sensors don't work any more. About $400 to fix.
4. A dead battery

Other than the water off the tail gate issue with our MA TX5 and a few software issues with starting the car, all fixed under warranty; our car has 100,000km on board with no issues. This has proven to be a great GT car.
My only real issue Ford service not knowing as much about software updates as the Forum community!

My MA XR5 had the well known water in hatch issue plus an early failure to start, the former Ford Aust decided was "as per design" so would not fix, the latter took 3 weeks to fix as no spares in Australia at he time, MA also has broken centre console catch, the MB has an improved design, I suspect in response to many failures of this catch in the MA.
MB XR5 no problems thus far.(just over 2 years of ownership from new)
My theory on the time for repairs is that Ford Australia has no interest in the Mondeo so does not provide proper training to the technicians to create a perception that the Mondeo has electrical issues, in a final forlorn attempt to save the Falcon.
The lack of advertising seems to back this up, plenty of publicity for Fiesta and Focus, but Mondeo doesn't even feature on the dealer adverts in the free newspapers, just Falcon with some low tech freebies and this month's special badge.
You dealers might want to argue otherwise?!!!!!!!!!!

you may be right mate, however having done a little time in workshops as a young bloke ,
i think you`ll find a common problem in nearly all workshops with all brands of cars these days, and that is that cars are becoming more computer like, and more complex, the role of mechanics i think is becoming in some ways easier in some ways harder, blokes are having much more complex electrical, and masses more of the stuff,

that`s not even to mention the more complex mechanical side like dsg gearboxes etc,etc , that probably a majority of blokes in the workshop would not even have seen one the ground, the problem is , as a technician you just can`t know everything, there`s a reason why we have auto electricians, transmission specialists, diff specialists, panel beaters, most workshops can`t be equipped / have technicians that are all knowing.

my young brother has commented many times on how his bosses very new high end euro is in the workshop more than it`s out for electrical gremlins,
i think this is the way it is , cars are changing becoming more complex too fast, looking at all these fully gadget equipped cars, i hate to think what they will be like when they are 10/12 years old.
cheers mik.

No criticism of the guys in the workshops, it is up to the manufacturers to ensure that product support is provided, especially as things get more and more complex. Seems it is ok to sell high tech cars but not to make sure that they can be repaired.

See my older thread here: PowerShift “Transmission Malfunction” error
Car is finally repaired and back on the road without problems (so far). It was in the workshop for 33 days. Apparently replacement gearbox which had to come from Belgium. By sailing ship apparently.

Just recently my diesel 2011 model has had "transmission limited function " come up as afault. The for dealer replaced the O2 sensor and said that it was the problem. However on the way home the trans failed again, the car was taken back to the dealer and we were tol "the fault did not present again and ford wont repair it until the fault presents again.

This was all after a trans axle fault was logged and we were told they would need it for two days to replace the sensor. I asume that the trans or motor need to be removed for this. The car is dangeous in its present state as you cannot put your foot down with confidence. I think we made some progress today . future updates to come.

Good luck with that Blatchie. Per the other thread I referred to - if Ford haven't seen that fault before they wont stock the replacement part!

However the good news MUST be (based on their own logic and reply to me) ... that if your transmission is faulty then they must now be holding parts (at least in Australasia) based on the ONE, SINGLE, ONLY transmission failure they've ever, ever, ever (did I say ever) had to date. Right.

And don't forget to allow weeks for the parts to arrive .... by sailing ship.

Rick, thanks I read the other post ours is not a powershift however it may be as I was not present when the car was demonstrated to my wife. If this is the case then they will have the car till it is fixed we have a car of the dealers to use.

So far they have been great since we have bought 3 new cars from them in the last 2 years .only 1 person has been a bit hard to handle but he was put in place by his boss yesteday .

this is sad as she was a holden girl and I coverted her to ford I dont wad a holden in my garage.

Has anyone had any problems with the door trims?
The glue obviously doesn't like the heat as the top of the trims keep coming unstuck in a big way.

Back in 2010, my MA did the same thing. It was fixed under warranty, and I have not had an issue since. I am hoping it was fixed with a better glue then the one used in the factory.

2010 MB XR5T
Issues:
* Factory 'delete option' of no bulb in the boot light fitting - fixed at 'peace of mind' check.
* Hatch rubbing paint off rear bumper. Towbar fitted pre-delivery, and hatch adjusted at around 13000kms. Problem persisted but the rear bumper has recently been resprayed to fix carpark scrapes damage, so I guess that is the end of that issue re warranty.
* Rear hatch washer squirts over rear wing (since new), largely missing the rear window. To be fixed next week at dealer. Apparently the rear washers are not angle adjustable, and mine has been mangled ex-factory.
* Occasionally loses the window close settings. Unexplainable but easily reset.
* Battery change in key fob (XR5 version) has resulted in total loss of programming in key fob. BOTH key fobs to be reprogrammed next week when washer is fixed (both because they are on a paired frequency arrangement thingy. Do 1 only and the other stops working).
* Gutter rash on all four 18" wheels because there is no bump-stop leeway with the 40series tyres. But I guess that is just 'pilot error'.
* Brake pedal loses pressure when you just sit there at the the traffic lights. Dealt siad this was just vacuum being used up and is operating within tolerance. Pedal does not floor. Interestingly, they did say that there was no vacuum or master cylinder failure - hmmmm.
* Rear washer is now leaking into hatch panel cavity and dribbles onto RR headrest. To be fixed next week at dealer when washer jet done.

By comparison, the only issue we had with the Mondeo's predecessor (a new 2003 Subaru Outback) was a squeaky dash shortly after delivery. Promtly fixed by dealer. Owned the car 7 years with no other hassles other than normal wear and tear.

Our 2008 XR5 is currently sitting on 106,00km. We had the MA Water off the tail gate (ongoing) and the issues with starting in the first few months of ownership. We did a windscreen on a road trip to Mt Isa (no real surprise!), and the power steering unit was 'adjusted' at 100,000km to silence it. Bluetooth connection is, shall we say casual. Issues with 'kurbing' the alloys as previously reported. Approx 45,000km from each set of tyres with regular rotation.
Other than that it still pulls like a train, no rattles, squeaks etc. One fantastic GT car!

owned since 30000km, now on 75000km.
Have had absolutely no issues with the car. The only bug bear that annoys me is the amount of rattles and creaks in the cabin, but I will fix these in up in time.

2011 MC Titanium Ecoboost
- Engine Malfunction, hoses came off, no details provided by Ford, only that they have been put back on.
- USB stops working and need to wait 10 minutes after turning the car off for it to work again. Only happened twice in 15 months
- Car has completed 16,000kms and front Bridgestone RE050A tyres need to be replaced. Rear tyres still look brand new.
- Buzzing sound in the dash which Ford cannot find.
- Vibration in drivers door, speaker was loose, now fixed.
- Hatch door rubbing on rear bumper.

Cheers

Our Titanium EcoBoost has the same thing, to the point of rubbing down the paint.

Another thing, the capless fuel filler is playing up, sometimes very hard to get the filler nozzle into the neck, the little flap wont open. Of to dealer land I suppose for this one.

Put a clear self adhesive pvc pad on the tailgate to maintain gap between bumper and hatch, costs a few cents but works a treat, I had same issue on MA so fitted to MB the day I collected and 30 months later still no sign of rubbing.

what causes the hatch to rub on the bumper, is it a lock adjustment to fix it, or is the hatch out of alignment??

6 months and 8500km the only thing is that three or four times I've had to pull the USB drive out and re-insert to get the music playing again.
