It's such a weird car but I have a soft spot for it because of the films. Apparently it's a real piece of crap in real life though. There was a new project started by DMC called the Firestar (or similar). Looked great from memory, never happened.

Hehe, probably. We already know what a flux capacitor does to it. Just stay away from thunderstorms.

The car looks stunning in person. No paint, just stainless steel.

I believe the car handles acceptably, but the engines (especially when mated to the automatic transmission) were pretty poor. Rough, loud and low-output. There's a guy in Melbourne I think who has put a new GM Alloytec engine into one, apparently it's much better. (I would have gone for the 2.8 L turbo alloytec they have in the Saab 9-3.)

Actually the standard Renault V6 makes the sound that you hear on the movie (awesome sound)- i believe it was a stock engine.

I have always wanted a DeLorean DMC-12

Interesting fact, not all of them were silver, but most of them were

They came in manual and auto
totally unreliable, but i still want one

Those are Yank specs- UK versions (as stated) were 160bhp which is not insignificant compared to a 250 x flox of same era!
All American spec vehicles lost considerable performance compared to EU/UK versions due to heavy emmissions regulations.
Someone here could tell me exactly, but the Mustang reached an all-time low in US with 110bhp from 5 litres around the same time....now thats pi$$ poor.
Given that an E28 BMW 528i had the same size donk and 184bhp, 0-100kph in 7.8 secs (man) performance is ok....

The FBI arrest is a bit of myth- he was only ever held on remand, and that was for 3 days. He was never been convicted of any criminal act. His "drug trafficking" case was thrown out of court after it was clearly shown that he was entrapped by the FBI.

Dead right, they sound pretty good in real life, the slowness was more than a little due to very high gearing- not sure what the ratios were though.

ALL cars were silver metal when they left the factory as standard; a few got painted at dealerships and some others ofter accident repairs.

No, I read somewhere that the Renault 6's sound was dubbed over with a Chev V8 engine to make the majority of the movie sound. They combined that V8 sound with a sample off the Star wars movies to make the sound of the Time Machine.

One giveaway is at the end of the 1st film, you hear Doc peel away when he takes marty home. The sound is off an Automatic V8 car, but at the start of the film when Marty is chased by the Libyans in their Combi, you see him change gears manually.

Thats aside, I love the DMC and always have ever since I first saw the movie. If one came up and I had the means to get one. I would in a heartbeat!

Dead right- they were actually gold plated, not painted...AMEX had them as prizes and there were only 2 of these. One other was put together using spare panels leftover from the first 2.

It is basically a Volvo B28E motor internally but with water pumps, alternator, pulleys etc from the Renault 30 motor.

I'd love one liek from the movies. My missus took a photo of it when she was in Universal Studios in Tokyo a year or so ago. I'd post it up if I could be stuffed.

Yeah? I thought that it was called the PRV (Peugeot-Renault-Volvo) engine because it was a joint venture between these manufacturers. – used by Volvo in the 760, Peugeot in the 505 V6 and Renault in all sorts of things (including the rear-engined Alpine). It had a weird angle from memory – 90 degree V6.

I found this on the Delorean website, might clarify things!

Q: What's the engine?

A: It's a Peugeot Renault Volvo V6 (PRV-6) 2849cc Bosch K-Jet fuel injected SOHC 90 degree V6. It's a US emission-controlled amalgum of the Renault 30 and Volvo B28 engines. It's often mistaken for a Renault engine due to the belts, pulleys, alternator and water pump using the Renault configuration, but the internals are common to the Volvo engine. The transmission is a slightly modified version of the R30's (both 3-speed auto and 5-speed manual). The gears are taller and the transaxle is rotated through 180 degrees for rear-mounting. The PRV-6 has been a popular choice among kit-car enthusiasts for years due to its flexibility and availability. The 3-litre 24 valve version of the PRV-6 was in new production cars up until only a few short years ago, for example the 24v was an option in the Citroen XM V6 and Peugeot 605 V6, though these are rare. The 12v 3-litre engines were used in these, and several Renaults, with the most common being the Laguna and Safrane up to 1997.

Q: How powerful is it?

A: In US form, it's not great. The engine only develops 130bhp. However the exhaust system is terrible for performance, and the catalytic converter makes it doubly bad. Just removing the cat can gain you 10-15hp. A free-flowing stainless exhaust can free up getting on for twice that, and remember the Volvo B28E engine of the time put out 160hp, and the differences are not massive... The Stage I upgrade DMCL offers is the modification to the Volvo version of the engine. Cosmetically, only a very trained eye will spot any differences. With the visible change of the free-flow exhaust, DMCL can up the power to over 200bhp with our Stage II performanc upgrade. On the other hand, a more adventurous owner might consider the 3-litre 24valve PRV which can be tuned to 250-300hp, and the most powerful versions were used by French supercar manufacturer Venturi in the Atlantique 300 as a single turbo 12v at 281bhp as standard (capable of up to 400bhp) and the 400GT with twin turbo 24v (the only manufacturer to turbocharge the 24v engine). In Le-Mans spec, this was capable of over 600bhp. Please see our performance page for information on getting one of these engines for your DeLorean.

Q: So a stock engine is slow then?

A: The car only weighs 1230kg, so even given the tall gears, it's easy to keep up with the flow in the fast lane, and with the performance upgrades, especially the stage II, you have a truly fast car.

Q: Where/when were they made?

A: In the Belfast suburb of Dunmurry in a purpose-built state-of-the-art factory. Cars were built from 1981-1982 with late '82 cars carrying '83 build dates.

Q: Why does the speedo only go up to 85mph?

A: It was a regulation in the US at the time. Corvettes of the same years also have 85mph speedos. The Canadian version carried a 240kph speedo, some of the Right-hand drive prototypes carry a 140mph face and theres a commonly available 170mph aftermarket replacement.

Q: What happens when you hit 88mph / Where's the flux Capacitor / when are you going back to the future / where's the cocaine then?

A: Ha ha. Very funny.

I wonder if the 85mph speedo limit is a US attempt at psychologically making would-be hoons from trying to exceed it. The government here was considering it.
