hii. just driving down wellington road this afternoon and the car next to me just slammed his brakes on and nearly hit me. not looking on the road he pointed and there were two guys in an undercover car standing beside it with the guns. not sure if i was caught or not but im just wondering how it works out with the guns? do they get in the car and catch you and let you know if you were speeding or does the letter come in the mail as usual. because the amount of people that were speeding through there it just makes it a bit odd for me. can anybody help me just a bit lost. i was approx 6kms over. cheers.

i think that if they are standing there with the guns they have to pull you over to book you the guns dont take a photo that is only the camera cars.

I have always thought that they usually hold up a sign for you to pull over or go and catch you, but I'm not exactly sure, what state are you from?

The radar guns are given a fair bit of leway. I have driven past a few 5 to 6 km/h over (only because i didn't see them) the limit and they don't give a 2nd look.

The best thing about the hand operated units is a certain amount of discretion is given, unlike the cameras :(

they usually sit there with guns and only get the people that are well over and chase them down.

You need to be puller over by a policeman. For all the bitching and and carrying on that occurs, you'll find most TMU blokes will be lenient up to about 10-15km/h over the limit before pulling someone over. It was also likely that they were using a laser, rather than a radar as a radar can't pick out individual cars from traffic.
Speed cameras on the other hand are not operated by police, they are not police cars and basically they just get police letterhead and a policeman's name on it to make it legal to issue. (IN VIC I'm talking about)

9 times out of 10 he/she will be a fair person and would probably let you off for not much over and you weren't being smart, but probably also let the drivers know that were excessively speeding why they were caught and what might happen. People generally would take more note of that rather than an in-the-mail fine notice |

If the only areas that are targetted were "black spots" then I think that most people would see speed camera's as a reasonable neccesity. But when they are only used in area's where people are most likely to slip over the limit, no matter how safe the conditions are, then they will never be accepted by the driving public, except FORD V8, he is perfect.

Well i doubt it will be too long before Police at the side of the Road with a Radar will just be able to take your number plate down and send you a letter with a fine in the mail.
They can already just get you to go into the station for a roadworthy check just because they have seen you on the road and think your car is unroadworthy And they can already just HEAR your car on the road and send you a letter in the mail asking you to go for an EPA test So all in good time................ Plus the way the road toll is going at the moment who knows they may just pass this law tomorrow

One guy was probably training the other one in the use of the radar gun. Perhaps they were comparing them... "I got 106, what did you get?"
