bad bruising?

hi all, thought i would ask here before spending $70 to see a doctor

about a week and a half ago i fell from my roof onto the top of an A frame style ladder. basically the ladder wasn't really high enough to reach roof but i had used it a few times before, i'm sure something distracted me as i was half way between the top of the ladder and the roof and as a result i fell.

so the reason for the post is - i landed on the top of the ladder with my upper leg/butt and have a really nice bruise as a result. the dark black bruise is fading, but where the middle of the bruise is/was there is a hard and painful lump still there right on/in the muscle.

never really been hurt badly before so i was wondering if this is a normal thing or not?

If you're not going to see a doctor perhaps at least get some over the counter ointment at the chemist to help break up the bruise. I had a bicycle vs Landcruiser moment when I was 17 (they got pinged for failing to give way) and ended up with a badly corked thigh. I remember a tender hard spot as well, but as the bruise cleared up, so did the lump. The doctor suggested Lasonil

If you can find this ointment called Tiger Balm, it does wonders. I've seen patches, ointment, creme and pumps.

Biofreeze is what my physical therapist used on me and I have a tube that I sometimes use after I work out.

But if the pain and the lump doesn't go away I'd suggest seeing your doctor. Or urgent care or something.

Mate that sounds normal unfortunately - a bruise/hematoma takes at least 4-6 weeks for the body to resolve the blood formed. If you're still able to walk on it that would exclude a fracture, so I would just give it some time.. heat packs and voltaren gel or whatever ointment recommended above would ease the inflammation.

thanks guys, that was the answer i was hoping for. figured it would hurt for a while, just wasn't sure how long and if the lumps were normal.

i'll have a look into the creams/balms

just put some cream on it

Sneaky, I agree with Poppa, go see a doc. Sure, it may be just a bad bruise with a resultant mass of blood and tissue forming a hard lump. But come on, we've been down this path before - us blokes don't need to see the doc, we are tough etc.
If you are concerned enough to post, go see your doc and let him tell you a) its nothing to be concerned about or b) we better have closer look.

i'll see how it goes for a bit longer. started a new job today, don't really want to go for sick leave a few days into the role.

and i figured it would hurt for a bit, just wasn't sure on the lumpy bits, but i think it is slowly improving - coming up to 2 weeks since i did it

Yes we're men but seeing a doctor is nothing.

I have to get medicals every year which are a lot more embarrassing than showing a bruise and at the end of the day, it's nothing, this guy has seen all kinds of gross stuff throughout his career. Wait until you turn 40 and you need to have a colonoscopy - that's when you'll learn a new-found respect for doctors.

For peace of mind you'd want to see a doctor, especially if it becomes painful.

ltd - didn't have to wait until 40 for colonoscopy, i think i had the pleasure when i was in my teens and probably 3 times since (now 31). i keep hoping they improve the flavour of the garbage you have to drink before the procedure but they never do :(

and i have also aquired a rope + harness for a bit of extra safety for future use on the roof
