Full Yamaha system with an RXV371 receiever. Good but if I was buying again I think I would go the next one up, just some compatability issues with some equipment. It does have Anynet though so I can control it, my PS3 and TV all from one remote. Pretty handy.

I've got a Klipsch system. It's just the two speaker plus subwoofer unit that has 3d sound... Something about bouncing sound off objects... But it works well. I went in wanting to buy a Bose system but got talked out of it. The sound quality of Bose is better and the speakers are smaller but this is good for now. But there's better systems out there.

We looked at Denon before going with the Yamaha, would have been happy with either, in the end our decision came down to price as we bought the sound system and the TV all at the same time.

Yeah i looked at the Yamaha aswell, much of a muchness really in my eyes. Im not that much of an audio perfectionist to notice the difference.

Rule of thumb, spend 50% of your budget on your speakers ( or more ) I have just bought a pair of Martin Logan Montis electro statics.... Just need to up date the rest now. Thinking Nakamichi.... Nakamichi is what i would reccomend to you. Not cheap but it should last a life time....

I agree with the 50% or more rule of thumb for speakers

If I was in the market or I had my time again Id buy one of these
http://shop.emotiva.com/collections/.../products/umc1
With this to power the fronts & centre
http://shop.emotiva.com/collections/.../products/xpa3
& this to power the rears
http://shop.emotiva.com/collections/...roducts/xpa200

Ive got an emotiva pre & power amp in my stereo & they are unbelievable for the money.
Those fella's that say you cant tell the difference in sound quality, you will with this gear & its not that much dearer than a good quality reciever.
Ive got a pioneer reciever SC-LX 83 that cost me $2500, they were $3,600 retail. The emotiva gear shiits all over the pioneer, the sound quality is awesome.

Dont discount buying second hand stereo gear for your home.
Audio heads tend to really look after their gear & upgrade a lot. There are plenty of bargains around

Interesting to hear about the speaker budget. I'll be taking that on board when I make my order. I'm also going for a down firing sub as my cabinet maker has made provision for one.

Sorry to hijack this thread but what is main features to look for in an amplifier?

Okay, so my few cents worth.
The so called - Home Theater - in modern homes is nothing but.
The emphasis is on big screen, tiny, descreet, speakers.
Most HT's are around 4m x 3m x 2.7m (height).
A 40Htz signal, has a wavelength of about 8.5 metres.
IOW, the 'sound' is best heard in the next room, and any sound you hear or feel (i.e. the explosion) is generally the result of the reflected sound from the next room/roof cavity.
Just a note, I remember many a pub band blasting above and beyond the point of reasonable, and standing at the bar seemed louder (hell, the bar was shuddering - and my breast bone), where as standing in front of the speaker bins was a non event - the bass sound passed right through you.
Room size is critical, and these mod squad home theaters are lacking.

I assume that you are going 5.1 7.1 ? If you are going good old stereo I would grab one of these http://www.valveamps.com.au/index.htm

Buying amps etc is a very personal thing. What you like sound wise might not suit someone else. As far as the usual consumer brands go, you can rely on Yamaha, Dennon as a starting point. Others might have some suggestions. What ever you get take a good long look at the spec sheet. Dont be sold by the output claims. Find a couple that you think might be OK, then get their model numbers and then hit google for more real world info.

I ended up with an Optoma HD33 3d projector, 100 inch screen, Yamaha RXA810 receiver , Mission MX4 speakers and Toshiba BDX4300KY 3d bluray player and using my Bose SIII speakers as the surround. Gets fitted Monday and I fly home tues morning. Can't wait

Yamaha RXV-659 7 channel amp
Pioneer DVH650 DVD 250 gb recorder
LG Plasma 42"
Speakers (2 front, 2 rear, centre and sub - unsure of brand)

All purchased in 2006/07 but still serve their purpose well and see no need to upgrade (yet) although I've been tempted to upgrade the DVD/hard disk recorder to a twin tuner digital with blueray in recent times and to upgrade the amp to one with with HDMI capability to reduce the spaghetti behind my cabinet

Great topic! This my other hobby when I'm not enjoying my Fords.

Built my dedicated room whilst building a new house so designed it from scratch in 2004.

Room specs:
Size ended up being 7m x 5m x 2.4m with full light control (no windows).
Soundchek gyprock with rock wool insulation
Automated illumination
Ducted air con
Liberty audio cable

AV Equipment:
Rotel 1056 receiver
Rotel rmb1075 5ch
Rotel rmb1080 2ch
Rotel rdv 1060 CD player
Oppo bdp-93 bluray
Foxtel IQ
Topfield STB
Klipsch rf5 mains
Klipsch rc7 centre
Klipsch rs7 side
Mission 71 rears
Hsu rear sub x1
SVS pc12 front subs x2. I like my bass

Projection:
100" Stewart film screen
Epson emp-tw2000

Refreshments:
Samsung bar fridge(full)
Bottle of jack

I've been doing this for a while now and find the room has multiple purposes, not just movie watching. Tbh I watch and listen to more music than movies and sports is excellent on the big screen. Bathurst events I barely leave my seat.

The great thing now is that you can get a excellent experience from a flat screen, receiver, BD player and some speakers for a small investment.

still tossing up whether to go 5 or 7.1 at this point. Probably 5 as the room is small medium sized (4.5x4.5x2.7H) At this point, I want clarity and quality at any given volume. Will be getting a 60"+ LED tv with it (yet to choose what brand) and I am looking for flush mount speakers that will fit in bulkheads, fake columns and ceilings. I want the streamlined look where you can hear the sound, but the look of the speaker doesnt detract from the appearance of the room. Hope that makes sense.

Sounds like a great setup, having concealed speaker systems that still produce quality sound for movies and music is the way I would go today. If you have the room for 7.1 I would definitely recommend it over 5.1. More Blu-ray Discs are coming out with this format and IMO it is a significant improvement to the movie watching experience.

Thanks mate, Im happy to got the 7.1 but wasnt sure if it was overkill for the room size. (refer attachment)

Im also going with a few layers of soundchek for reduced noise transfer between rooms and the flooring.

As for Blu-ray, my PS3 has it, and I was planning on running blu ray discs thru that as long as the quality of the sound is still good. I still to this day have not played a blue ray disc on that machine yet. lol just lazy.

Thoughts?

Im also going with a few layers of soundchek for reduced noise transfer between rooms and the flooring.

As for Blu-ray, my PS3 has it, and I was planning on running blu ray discs thru that as long as the quality of the sound is still good. I still to this day have not played a blue ray disc on that machine yet. lol just lazy.

Thoughts?
Yeah I see your point looking at room layout, 5.1 would be just fine in that size room. Some would say 7.1 is overkill, not me. lol
Its just 7.1 content is becoming more available now.

It will be great room when finished, I love the little bar area on the side and the bulk heads. I wish I'd done that, maybe one day.

What's your plans with av equipment? Trust me once you have a dedicated HT you tend to acquire more gear over time. An AV rack built into a wall/column or similar might be an idea? Are you running any audio/visual to other areas of the house?

well at this stage I havent really thought about it fully. I got a dimmer for the down lights, some mood lighting for the over head cupboards for the mini bar. Ive already even bought my mini bar fridge which was has a triple glazed glass door and led lighting inside. Over the top? probably....

For the joinery, it was custom designed to house a down firing sub, I got a infra red eye fitted to the front of the cabinetry so I can have my cabinet doors closed and still operational for the remotes. I also have in built and concealed vents added to the kicker panels too for the amp/receiver etc. heavy duty overhang hinges for a different appeal to the cabinet doors too. A few down lights here and there but nothing too extravagant. I specifically requested larger entry doors for the ease of furniture delivery/removal too.

I think as far as HT gear is concerned, Im just looking for high quality, low maintenance equipment that can be stored in the cabintry, look clean and concealed yet throw out a punch when needed.

Over the top? No. Cool? Yes.

It looks like you've done your homework and have most things covered.
Living in SA you have some pretty well known speaker manufacturers available to you if you haven't already found something you like.

Anyway I would like to love to see some progress pics but only if your welling to post, understandable if you don't.

To the OP apologises for side tracking your thread a little. To answer your question I've never been a big fan of the 3D movies so I can't really offer anything either way, I probably should have mentioned that earlier.

I'll make up a separate thread for it Noddy, with pics and all.

For the home theatre, the sub woofer I plan on using is a Klipsch SW-350 or 450. Either model will fit in the designed cabinetry compartment.

The bar fridge cost me an arm, leg and left testy
Vintec Stainless steel series
V30SG2ESS - front vented version

supposed to fit 40 bottles of wine or something like 150 stubbies upright.
