"There are millions of possible combinations but after decades on the road, we've almost used them all up.
Now, the next generation of Queensland licence plates are upon us equipped with a brand new, high-tech crime deterrent. With the naked eye, the difference is barely visible but elements of the new-look plates are hidden in plain sight. Queensland drivers are set to deal with a new kind of licence plate. (9News) "This is a huge change. Sixteen-million combinations will take us through for another 25 years to 2045," Transport Minister Mark Bailey said. The current three numbers and three letters combination will change to three numbers, two letters followed by one number. The number will jump back a spot from right to left. (Nine) When those combos are exhausted the number will jump back a spot, then back again creating two decades of options. Also built in are a new "QLD" security mark, the size of a ten cent piece imprinted multiple times and visible only at a certain angle. Related "It's hard to reproduce and it's reflective, so you'll be able to see it at night as well as during the day," Mr Bailey said. They are already being used on trucks. "It will help at a roadside, (whether it's an) intercepted vehicle, a random check or something else, cops can quickly look and see the hologram," Andrew Mahon, general manager of Land Transport Safety and Regulation, said. The 'QLD' markings are visible only from a certain angle. (Nine) The current style of plates will run out of possible combinations by September when the new ones are rolled out. It will be the first change to licence plates in Queensland in two decades. Queensland's millionth personalised plates will also be sold this month and is being marked with a competition. "We're asking all of the plate owners out there to get in touch and they'll go into the draw to win a $5000 Queensland holiday," Taylor Clifford, from Personalised Plates Queensland, said. Personalised plates won't carry the mark." https://www.9news.com.au/national/li...e-fbd082a99b1e

I like how they describe the watermark as a new innovation. WA trailed them way back in '96.
It'll be interesting if anyone thinks up any good new letter/ number combos in their new state series.

Is counterfeiting number plates even a thing? I thought the biggest reason people used dodgy plates was to do crimes like stealing petrol. Then they just steal the plates first, anyway.

As far as I’m aware the plates remain the property of the state government, it’s the combination you own. It’s actually illegal to repair them from accident damage though I’ve never heard of anyone fined for doing so. If all the old plates were handed in we wouldn’t need so many plates, the numbers could be reissued. Yes there are a lot more cars on the road but there’s more plates sitting around in sheds/man caves, I may or may not have a few

Say you steal a white BMW X3, you look on Carsales for a white BMW X3, and clone it's plate. Then you whack that on your stolen item, behind a number plate frame, and the various Number Plate Recognition systems, toll cameras, etc won't blink an eye.

They swap over the plates from the stolen vehicle to another the same year and type, then take the stolen plates and put them on their hot car. When the owner of the second car comes back to it he is very unlikely to check his number plates. He could be driving round for weeks till he gets the speeding fines and parking tickets in and realises that his plates have been swapped.

Just our last name to go in the shed. They looked pretty good and if mounted on a car you would need a sharp eye to spot them as a fake.

See they’re doing tradeins at ppq now as well.
You get a mighty $75 rebate if you order a $485 plate, and I think it’s $250ish for a prestige plate. So generous. |

Actually a new QLD security mark is what was said. I don't imagine a QLD water mark would have been used in W.A way back in 96 or any other time since either.

WA was used a year stamp on and off for a couple of years in the 90's but I haven't seen them since.
