Default Drink driver: Woman blew nine times over limit at accident scene

There was an article back in December 2015 about a woman on the Gold Coast who blew 0.48.

The article on the Gold Coast Woman: http://www.news.com.au/national/quee...3cd3335e4d0f43

Here is a woman from Coffs Harbour who is going for the record.

Drink driver: Woman blew nine times over limit at accident scene

7 March, 2016
The Daily Telegraph

A NSW woman has been charged with being nine times over the drink-drive limit after being breath-tested at the scene of a crash.

Police believe she has *recorded the highest blood-alcohol level of any motorist in the state’s history.

The 52-year-old woman was *injured when her Hyundai Veloster left the road and collided with a fence in Coffs Harbour.

Although the incident took place on Sawtell Rd in Boambee East in January, her exact blood alcohol level was not released by the police until now.

On Friday, official confirmation reached police that the alleged blood alcohol reading was 0.486.

Detective Inspector Darren Jameson of the Coffs Local Area Command said he believed the reading of 0.486 was the highest on record.

“Drink-driving is a very serious offence and not only risks the safety of the driver, but also all other road users,” he said.

The woman was issued a future court attendance *notice for high-range PCA, to appear at Coffs Harbour Local Court on May 2.

The woman’s licence has been seized.

0.48?! Geez, between 0.35 and 0.40 is considered a fatal dose. It's amazing she could function at all, let alone put herself behind the wheel of a car.

So, her blood itself contained more alcohol than straight Vodka?

Insane....

Heard on the radio that the machines to read this only go to .500!

Having said that, I wonder what her 2nd test read?

If she had been drinking and driving a quick swill just prior to the test could have shown an incorrectly high reading.

Nah vodka would read at 37.0, where this lady is 0.48. It's still super high, but she'd need to drink 100x more than she did to get the walking vodka bottle levels

Id assume that would be her second reading... She drove a Hyundai veloster through a fence! LOL

Woman allegedly caught nine times the legal limit near Coffs Harbour

8 March, 2016

Matt O'Sullivan

See link below for video

Police believe a Coffs Harbour woman may have returned NSW's highest ever blood alcohol reading after she crashed into a fence last month.

A Coffs Harbour mother has allegedly returned the highest blood alcohol reading in the state's history – and possibly the country – after she crashed into a fence and was found unconscious last month.

Trudy Friend, 52, has been charged with an alleged blood alcohol reading of 0.486 - nearly nine times the legal limit.

Ms Friend was driving on Sawtell Road in Coffs Harbour at about 2.45pm on January 13 when her Hyundai Veloster veered to the left before mounting a curb and smashing into a fence, police say.

Trudy Friend was placed in an induced coma after the accident. Photo: Channel Nine

Inspector Joanne Reid, from Coffs Harbour Police, said the potential for "something catastrophic" to happen from the woman driving on a busy road with such a high alcohol reading had been "incredibly high".

"Based on our records, it's the highest ever recorded. I have been in the police for 22 years and I have never seen anything come close to that," she said on Tuesday.

"I have never seen anyone at 0.4. – even for a bloke [the alcohol reading was at the highest level].

Trudy Friend allegedly crashed into a fence. Photo: Channel Nine

"The fact that she only hit a fence is miraculous. Sawtell is a fairly busy road and connects to the Pacific Highway."

Emergency services had found the woman unconscious in the car when they arrived at the crash scene last month and she was taken to Coffs Harbour Hospital where she was placed in an induced coma.

Last Friday, police received confirmation Ms Friend had a blood alcohol content of 0.486. The woman's licence was seized and she has been issued with a licence suspension notice.

A blood alcohol concentration under 0.05 is the legal limit for most drivers in NSW.

However, the limit is under 0.02 for taxi or bus drivers while it is zero for learners and P-platers.

Police warn that alcohol affects people differently due to size and weight, gender, liver function and other factors such as a person's fitness or whether they are fatigued.

"The lesson is that ... if you plan to behind the wheel of a car, don't drink," Inspector Reid said.

Ms Friend will appear at Coffs Harbour Local Court on May 2.

I think the decimal point position is playing up here.

If she is .48 isn't that 48%???? Much the same as .05 is 5% which is why a lady can have 1 beer or around 5% per hr to stay on / near .05.

1.0 would be 100%

So if vodka is 37% alcohol wouldn't it be .37??

Anyone can clarify / shed light on this???

Most people around here drive like they have that much alcohol in their system.

I think the 0.486 means the person has 0.486grams of alcohol per 100ml of blood ?

http://alcoholrehab.com/alcoholism/b...entration-bac/

Quote:
Blood Alcohol Concentration Explained

Blood alcohol concentration is a measurement of the percentage of alcohol in the blood stream. For example, if an individual has a BAC of 0.21 it means that the 21% of the fluid in their blood stream is alcohol. The higher the blood concentration level increases the more damaging it can be to the individual. The highest ever recorded BAC level was in Poland where tests showed that one man had reached 1.48. The average person will die at less than one third of this level.
I was right then???

I think that last bit about the bloke in Poland is a typo, should be .48 not 1.48.

Seems from my research on Wikipedia that is also correct....

Now I'm more confused

0.48% s just under 1/2% Vodka at 37% so her reading was about 1/80 the alcohol content of vodka

No, thats incorrect.

0.48 IS the percentage. Her bloodstream was 0.48% pure alcohol, so therefore 99.52% blood (water, and whatever else makes up a bloodstream)

0.05 is not 5% its 0.05%.

If 37% vodka could be passed through a policemans breathalyser it'd read 37.00.

Re the second reading
one time I had a beer with the boss after work
I drank the stubbie of full strength beer then drove towards home
about 100 metres down the road I was pulled up and asked to blow in the bag
well I was told I was way over when asked if Id been drinking I said yes
Id had one beer with the boss and was told by the testing cop
that I had had about 6 beers I told him no way and its legal to drive with one beer in you so I asked him to test me again and he made me wait 15 minutes
and I blew in the bag again and he told me to Pi$$ off and dont do it again
so maybe she had 2 different readings

The machine they push thru your window is just a preliminary test, if you fail it you will be retested with a more actuate machine with the option of a blood test.

Also if you’ve just been drinking a 10 minute wait to allow the alcohol in your mouth to dissipate before retesting is mandatory.

This woman was admitted to hospital and placed into a coma, she would have undergone mandatory blood testing in the hospital for a range of substances.

And sadly when they suspend her license for X number of years, we will read about her being pulled over again driving p#ssed with a suspended license....

The reason they ask the driver when their last drink was is because it will be inaccurate if yested within 20 mins of the last drink, so they will wait and test again.

That would mean about a full litre or more of pure alcohol in your blood stream, or about 3 or 4 bottles of vodka 100% absorbed into your bloodstream

The prescribed concentration of alcohol is a concentration of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. So at a reading or 0.21 it would mean that the person has 0.21 grammes of alcohol (about 1/5th of a gram or a tiny drop) in 100 millilitres of blood, the fabled person in Poland had 1.48 grammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres.

It has nothing to do with percentages.
