Default How to give my ED a kick in the ***.

Hi all,,,

I have an ED fairmont which has done 270000km.
It still runs good however it is very underpowered - which doesnt surprise me too much.
I would like to know what are some of the things i can do to give it a bit more power.

The car is only used as a hack around so im not after a $10000 turbo add on or anything like that.

How bout a cam or thermo fans? What about a better intake system?

I already have a 2 and a half inch exhaust.

Any info much appreciated.

Cheers...

You already got the exhaust that's a good start, i'd recommend getting a manual conversion, cam, extractors and a decent air filter, should go fairly well after these mods.

Thanks for your reply...

Has to stay auto - due to the misses only having an auto license.
I already have extractors.

What sort of cam - and what sort of price am i looking at. Are the power gains worth the dollars???

What are some of the intake systems available?

Do thermo fans make much of a difference.

I should add that the car only does long distant runs and has trouble up hills and over taking. ( especially road trains ).

cheers.

Make sure your cat isn't blocked.

Its funny you say that 'oneredED' because thats what i thought too.

How can you check? and how much is a new cat worth???
Will exhaust places bypass this and put a pipe in there for me or are they not allowed too??? - Yes i know this is bad but the amount of pollution my work produces a year doesnt worry me on how much my ed will.

Cheers...

I bet a $10,000 fine from the EPA for not having a cat will make you worry _2:

Seeing that you've already got extractors and exhaust either buy a new highflow cat or just buy a cheap 2nd hand unit from the wreckers to confirm thats causing the problem.

Can i punch out the guts of the cat and bolt it back on for now until i get a high flow cat?

What are some of the cams i can get?

Will thermo fans make much of a difference for more power or not?

Thanks for your information.

check out wade cams, or even give them a call in regards to a cam to suit your application.. thermo fans are better, but they will free up bugger all HP..
if its loosing power id give it a comp test.. my eb has a few k's clocked up on her and it still pulls hard... saying that, the head is starting to leak coolant, so its time for a freshen up!

Gday mate!

The discussion of de-restricting cats is not taken too kindly on these forums. So we should steer clear of that topic for now The forums arn't for discussing any illegal practises or activites.

As for cams, a Wade regrind cam are around $120, and can get you 120 ~ 130rwkw with your mods so far. A 1004/114 grind is a good start, or if you want a more lumpy idle, a 1004/110 is nice. With an auto, its a bit harder for the car to idle steady, but thier are ways to fix this problem.
A few members have tried the 1636 with good results.
Best give them a call, or check out thier website.

Other companys who grind cams are Crow, Tighe, Come, but I dont know any of thier range.

Thermofans brand new, aftermarket can be bought for $180 on ebay, plus wiring kits are $130. Or if you do your own wiring, $30 for a thermatic switch, $15 in realys and another $25 in cables, fuse holders and connectors.

The E-series website tech page has some more info for you.
http://deleted link/portal/kb.php?mode=cat&cat=2

Dont be afraid to ask for help. Most members here know a lot and have done these mods over and over.

Why do people keep quoting that $10,000 fine for faulty cat?

That figure is more for companies no individual gets a $10k fine for no cats, you just get defected and have to put good ones on.

To answer IH8HSV yeah you can knock the stuffing out of the cat, have a look to see if its collapsed before you go ruining a good cat though.

As mentioned a pipe would be better for flow then a hollowed cat, put a heat shield off a cat around it if youre going to do this.

Thanks for your replys...

What does it mean to have your cam shaft regrinded. And how does this make your car run with a bit more power?

cheers...

You would have to pick up a 2nd hand cam from the wreckers, post it to wade and the re-grind for fordmods members is about $120...

I too am interested in what sort of power gains i can get from a cam regrind.

My EB has done 320000km. Will i see much of an improvement???
How does it work? I thought less meat on the cam meant less opening of the valves!!?.

Also...

Is there any disadvantage of knocking the stuffing out of a collapsed cat?
Mines always makes tingling noises and i think it may be blocked.
I know the enviromental aspects of doing it but our family car is on gas so im doing my part..

cheers

Yeh there is a power advantage of knocking the inside out of your cat but as has been stated were not allowed to talk about it due to forum regulations of illegal modifications that been said alot of turbos on here are illegal but anyway a 1636cam would get u about another 15 rwks or there round abouts.
