Indigenous Coalition MP Ken Wyatt has spoken out against the repeal of legislation making it unlawful to offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate on the grounds of race or ethnicity.

Mr Wyatt told Fairfax Media he fears that repealing section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act would disempower the vulnerable or result in a hardening of intolerant attitudes.

''Australia has come a long way in the last 30 or 40 years and what I wouldn't like to see is a regression that allows those who have bigoted viewpoints to vilify any group of people at all,'' he said.

His remarks came as Attorney-General George Brandis described the existing law as ''extremely invasive'' and reaffirmed the government's intention to ''do away'' with it.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott promised to ''repeal section 18C in its current form'' in August 2012 on the basis that freedom of speech should not be restrained ''just to prevent hurt feelings''.

Ethnic, religious and indigenous groups and leaders have urged the government to think again.

There is a big difference in telling a joke and using a persons race , religion etc to demean them. Too many nanny state rules. And we forgot the Irish!!!

You could say I'm dark skin as my mum is from PNG, but my dad's white. I'm 41 now and I've loved the Australian way, up until all this new politically correct bullshit has come along. I've always had mates of all sorts of races and background. We all get on and all muck around calling each other names. Like they call me black boy, and I call them white trash etc, but guess who will have my back if I'm ever in trouble? This has all was been the Australian way and if they're a mate it doesn't matter where they're from. These new Australians have got to learn not to take things to heart and if they want to live in our country learn our culture. We'd should not have to change to suit them. I'm sure my granddad and dad or even my eldest brother, didn't fight for our freedoms for this crap.

Big difference between jokes amongst mates and the kind of thing Section 18C was designed to combat

It is disingenuous for the OP and other posters in this thread to sum up Section 18C as some kind of restriction on the more odious aspects of Australian humour, as that's not what it is at all

18C cannot be used to stop you from mucking around with your mates or telling repugnant jokes at a backyard BBQ because it requires an objective test to determine whether something is "reasonably likely, in all the circumstances, to offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate another person or a group of people". Despite what people would have you believe, it was never just enough for a person to be able to say "he offended me" -- it is judged on behavioural standards of the community, not on the views of the individual complainant.

Yep .. me too, I was born a Yorkshireman and proud of it .. But I have been here for 44 years and was naturalised as an Aussie 40 years ago and am proud of that too.

Just going to say as the clock counts down on this thread, there is a BIG difference between racism and hate speech for a start. They are extremes. I think the broader term you are looking for is discrimination. As to insinuate that the issue is purely racism, that's a bit discriminatory don't you think?

Would you not agree though, that there is a vast gulf between a joke that is designed to offend and that which is supposed to detail some superior national character/flaw?

For example, jokes about aborigines and women can be downright offensive. And I laughed at them all back in the day. To this day, I have yet to hear a joke that denigrates a white Australian male in the same manner, because they don't exist...
