Should I buy a Mondeo

Hi all-knowing Ford fans.
Help please, I am tossing up the decision of whether or not to buy a 2015 or younger Mondeo. Would, in your opinion, I be making a mistake?

I've had my 2017 ex Ford H/O Ecoboost Titanium Hatch for about 8 months now.
Drives really nice, quiet & comfortable with everything you need in a car.
I'm a VW man so drove a current Passat and Skoda Superb as well as a Mazda 6 GT and Camry for comparison.
The Mondeo won hands down in value for money stakes as was under 30k drive away (circa 50k brand new) with only 15,000kms on it, a bargain as far as I'm concerned.
Only downside is it's a little thirsty when pushed, but compared to an older Falcon, nothing outrageous.

2015 ecoboost Mondeo titanium should be a great car to own and very relaible. The conventional torque auto mated with the 2.0 petrol turbo is a nice combo and the titanium spec adds a lot of nice extras. Does it have the tech pack? I have a titanium escape with the ecoboost and tech pack and love the oomph it provides for long cruising. It was a toss up for me between a mondeo and an escape but Mrs M wanted an SUV for ease of entry and exit. Happy wife happy life.

Spend $10 and read the critically objective review at the Dog & Lemon Guide here: https://dogandlemon.com/ At worse you will find out what most often fails with them so you know what look for in buying used. Read the free Freelander review. As part of the 3 for $10 perhaps get the review of one of your current vehicles to satisfy yourself of their accuracy.

Asking owners opinion on any car especially on a enthusiasts; site like this is also unwise. Research shows that we all (me included) generally have cognitive dissonance with respect to our car purchases and usually won't recognise or admit to any shortcomings; nobody likes to think they made a bad purchase decision or their new car is not as good as they thought. This is actually a natural and good thing as it helps people avoid regret and associated depression. I don't know how the Dog & Lemon Guide rate the current Mondeo but you'll get an objective rating from their reviews. The older pre 2010 models got an "Avoid Like The Plague" rating.

I thought they all had DSG trans? That's the biggest thing holding me off from buying.

MD Ecoboost runs a normal 6 speed auto, partly the reason I bought one over a diesel.

Ive got an 18 Titanium Ecoboost, I love it. yes it does drink when you push it, anything will, I average about 550kms to a tank.

We owned an MA diesel zetec sedan from 2009 through 2018 and the car never put a foot wrong and returned 6+/- 0.2 litres per 100 km across that time. The only warranty work was to replace the drivers seat belt stalk because of an intermittent switch and the takata air bag snafu.

The current car (see sig) is pretty much the same but has better fuel economy (5.5 +/- 0.2 litres per 100 km) and just like the previous car. thus far warranty work has been manufacturer generated stuff (takata air bag and battery harness). the driver assistance stuff is very useful and allows me to concentrate on what others are doing without worrying too much about monitoring speed, maintaining safe braking distances and not wandering out of the lane. It did have an annoying low level vibrating rattle on coarse chip surfaces, but I traced that to the sliding fence in the cargo area, so that doesn't travel with us now unless I have a reason to restrain luggage and the like.

My beef is with Ford deciding to cease importing the car -- and might even stop manufacturing as they are concentrating on SUV type vehicles, so I guess my next car will not be a Ford.

Yes there have been some transmission problems in a few vehicles, but ours has not shown any sign of trouble and isn't the box that was fitted to Focus(?) vehicles that got Ford such a bad reputation.

I'm not going to say buy one, that is your decision to make, but the chances are you will be happy if you do.

I've said this before in other threads.
I own the first MD Mondeo Titanium Ecoboost imported by Ford Australia six months before they became available to buy. It was used as a static display and for training sales staff and technicians etc. It's still a point of confusion for the service department sometimes as it's an MD but first registered November 1014.

I'm very happy with it, it's a great looking car and I've had very few issues, all of which were resolved under warranty.
Very similar in size to an FGX but much more refined with the added bonus of being a hatchback (I know, not everyone's cup of tea!).

In the end, each to their own.

I rented a Fusion (US Mondeo) in 2016 and covered 8500kms in 3 weeks crossing northern USA, from Seattle to Boston with many divergencies off the main route, including to Prince Edward Island in NE Canada.
It was a Titanium, 2.0 turbo, conventional automatic. It certainly had ample power which was demonstrated on our climb out of Yellowstone Park over the Beartooth Pass.
It was an unexpected upgrade to the rental car I had booked, and being a Ford man, it increased my enjoyment of the road trip immensely. It was a good car for that drive, and the only time I have ridden in a "Mondeo".

I wouldn't. The last of the Australian made Toyota Aurion is a much better car.

I have looked at the Mondeo a few times.
If you shop around they are very good value for money, 2nd hand. I test drove several diesels, and they were incredibly smooth.
They have the larger wet-clutch version off the power shift, so they don't have the same problems as the smaller dry-clutch version fitted to the Focus and others. I test drove several 2nd hand ones, with upto 60~70kk, and all passed testing for the shudders.

I found the MC interior to be a bit dated and bland, especially on the base model, but the MD is nicer.

The answer to that is yes.

Well, you did ask for our opinion. I would, without hesitation, I think it's the best car in the segment, and for that money and that sort of kms - you could go a little lower in price, but for the amount of features it's got, that's pretty much a steal as it is.

Mechanically I've had no real matters of concern with it. I'd say go for it, test drive and look at it carefully and then make up your mind.

I really like the wagon but it seems there's no 177KW Ecoboost wagon, only the lower tune 149KW one.

That's a bit disappointing, it limits me to the hatch which is still fine but I really liked the wagon.

That puts me down to two cars - Ecoboost Mondeo or Ecoboost Falcon.

The four cylinder falcons are cheap to buy, though daresay resale will be poor.

The last of the mondeos seem fully priced. Not exactly sure why. Suspect theyll also be a quite different drive experience to the falcon.

When you look at the tech in the MD Mondeo it is well advanced over the Falcon and offers as much room. The Mondeo hatch option is more versatile than a sedan and the wagon is far superior a car to the BF3s. If money is a concern then a falcon can be a good buy but you will be looking at high millage in most cases.

We have a bunch of MC Mondeos at work. They're garbage.
Compared to the one MD Mondeo we have.
It's a winner. Anytime I get to spend the day in it, I'm happy.

I would be suspicious of any second hand diesel. They need to have a good long run every few weeks to let the DPF regenerate. If you don't you can get problems. Did the previous owner do this? Maybe and maybe not. Too much of a chance to take. Stick to petrol engines for second hand cars.

Agree - my Focus has a previous generation of the diesel engine in the MD Mondeo, it's Euro IV though so no DPF.

Diesel Mondeo is off the cards for me for DPF and DSG reasons.

DSG is another can of worms. The DSG in the Mondeo is a wet clutch model which is different from the Getrag dry clutch transmission fitted to the Focus and Fiesta which has caused so much woe. I haven't heard of any problems with the Mondeo DSG but never the less I agree with you that it isn't worth taking a chance when there are plenty other makes with reliable torque convertor transmissions. Both Toyota and Honda tried those automated dual clutch manual boxes, had trouble and dropped them. Volkswagen/Audi use them but have had a large number of failures usually just after the warranty expires. VAG are not sympathetic to the owners of failed DSG boxes outside the warranty. Hyundai/Kia are now fitting them but it is too soon to tell whether they will be reliable. Strangely enough dual clutch automated manual transmissions are supposed to be fine in Volvo and DAF trucks but I expect that they are heavy duty models.
It is odd that car reviews and manufacturers adverts only state that the transmission is automatic without saying what sort of automatic - DSG, TC or CVT. They give plenty of information about the engine.

Yes. I have the Diesel Titanium. Done nearly 53,000 kms. No problems although it does have a few door rattles etc.

I would buy another new one again if they still made them. Its so efficient the worse economy I've seen out of it in the 53,000 kms is 6.2 per hundred. No gearbox issues but note the gearbox oil has to be changed every 60,000 kms on the diesel (makes that service $910 according to the ford service price calc).

One other downfall with them is spare parts are pricey which can affect insurance. My mrs has damaged the front lower skirt on one side and to replace was going to be $300 just for the small bit of plastic plus paint etc, I've repaired it.

Also note there is no resale on them. I looked at trading mine a few months ago and the best offer I could get was 16k for a car that was $47k new (I didnt pay 47k) but yeh the resale on them is atrocious. You only buy one if you plan on running it till the wheels fall off it in my opinion. Mine has 3 years warranty left so I will run it for that 3 years and then hopefully sell it for 8 - 9 k with 150k on it.
