Default WHat is it with insurance? XR8 vs SS utes

Hi,

I'm currentl;y weighing up purchasing an AUIII XR8 ute vs VUSII SS and wanting to look at TCO.

So I get insurance quotes..

AAMI -

SS ute - $1100 pa
XR8 - $2200 WTF!

so SS it is. but I thought I'll go check NRMA

XR8 - $1100
SS ute - $2200 WTF!!!!

What is going on with these mullet heads...is NRMA a holden sponsor and visa versa...

Insurance companies are whack.
I applied for a quote for insurance if I turboed my car, haed work, cam work, engine work, gearbox work, the absoloute lot that I could tick in the way of mods, and it ended up being $10 per annum cheaper than what I was already paying, no excess change. Work that one out.

I'm being ripped I expect.. 36 y/o in Sydney (this is probably the issue).

Just weird that the quotes were essentially reversed depending on the company.

At age 25 I was looking for a change of cars and rang around to get insurance quotes on a number of cars.

New BA XR8 ute, value $38,000 = premium $1,000pa
95 Holden commodore vs ss, value $15,000 = premium $2,800pa

I asked the operator why a cheaper car with less power was so much more expensive, and why the premium changes on a daily basis.

The answer she gave me was that they don't look purely on the value of the car. Most of the premium is actually calculated off the claims database. Makes sense, the SS was more affordable to inexperience drivers and a lot more claims made. The BA XR8 was new and i guess hardly any claims made. The claims database is updated on a daily basis hence why premium can fluctuate. That is how it was explained to me. I'm guessing NRMA and AAMI maintain seperate databases.

How's this for whacked in the head...

This was back in Dec 06, both quotes are from the RAC...
My previous car, 02 BA XT (V8) with mods insured for $19,000 cost me $104/mth.

My current ride (2003 BA XR8 with mods) insured for $28,000 costs me $84/mth!!!...this is for a 29yo with no accident history or speeding fines

AAMI changed this. They will now insure under 25's but a higher excess if they have a prang. I believe they changed this last year, as originally my wife could not be on my policy (under 25) and I checked with them when I renewed my insurance last year and they said that she now could but with an extra excess.

Yeh they did change this recently. They do now insure under 25's who drive V8's but the excess is a bit higher. If i stuff the car my excess it 1200 dollars, which aint to bad. But i have to talk to them about mod's as i have no idea on there stand on modification for the car.

Do anyone know AAMI's stand on car mods when there under 25

On this basis a VL should cost $10,000 a year to insure, Wouldn't mind betting theres a lot of VL's running around without insurance at all.

Umm wtf are u serious. How long ago though and whats ur driving record?

I actually called AAMI today and asked about mod's. If i wanna put a CAI on my car its gonna increase my insurance cost by 950 dollars pa. WTF. Where do they pull these numbers from.

Can anyone recommend a good insurance company that will insure a person under 25 driving a V8 and wants to do mods that wont cost 1000 dollars per mod

geez, im 26, clean driving record, and I pay $1100 for a STOCK VS V6 5 spd ute. Then I pay the same for the Buick V8. 7.5l, 1 of 3 registered in NSW that I know of, so it aint as common as the Ute. Then the XC. That was $900.fhark me. I did get it down to 500 odd, but geez. The insurance for the ute has gone up too, with the value going down. Time to sell it, and get a job with a company car.....

Josh_XC, how are you with AAMI with a XR8? They wouldn't touch me with a V8 at that age. With Just Cars now and paying $1600, before that i was paying $2000 with RACV
