Default Tyre options for 11.48 @ 123.5MPH car.

Hey guys,

Haven't ever really been in here much but now I have a car that I've started to race I am in need of some help, assistance and guidance!

My car is an 2008 FG G6E Turbo. I have raced it 4 times so far. 3 runs on Nitto NT05R 275/40/17 @ a touch under 20psi on BA XR alloys. I use the Nitto NT05 on my street wheels 275/30/19.

I have only run the car on the R tyres at Heathcote test and tunes so far. The best run being an 11.48 @ 123.52MPH. Best 60ft so far is 1.93...

I have been advised to move to a 16 inch wheel and a 235/60 MT ET tyre.

I make no other changes to the car to race it. It has the full size (19") spare and jack. All my change in the centre console and a full tank of BP Ultimate.

Fire away

Jack

Sorry for my noviceness...

Advised to go to a 255/50 MT ET...

Edit: and just to add to this so all information is on the table. The car has Koni Red shocks, King Springs that aren't too low. I imagine the car is close to or even over 4000lbs.

So far the best 60ft I have gotten out of the car is a 1.93 on the Nitto's.

You can go a 275 ET on a 17" XR wheel, quite a common way to go...

MT's are the common tyre that most 'recreational' drag racers use. I only went for the Nitto NT05R due to cost and whether I was actually going to 'take to' drag racing my car and if I didn't then end up with a set of wheels and tyres I didn't need any more.

I like it

I also appreciate that a 275 MT on a 17" rim would be better again but I am also interested whether a 16" rim would be better as that is the advice that I have received.

depends on your brakes size. 16" may not fit.

As i stated in your build thread, 17/40/275 from vpw.com.au or speedpro in dandy. <$300 a tyre. You can pick em up and stop of at the bridgestone just on the corner of the Speedpro shop and have the guys there fit the et on the xr rim on the spot for $10 a tyre! Win win.

Plenty running low 10s with the setup!

Yep 275 17 are the go , but if you insist on 16's , I run 255/50/16 on a 16x7 rim with no issues . 60' 1.60 all day and would prob go a 1.5 with the new convertor .

I use 275/40x17 jack, I think they work ok. Not that I've ever run a quick 60, 1.88 my bestest, but, that's more to do with my sympathetic launching, not lack of grip. At heathcote they hold full throttle in second gear...

If you can get the 16 on, don't look back!
The tyre size in a MT ET street is the shizzzz
Even a 265 or 275 if you can squeeze them under.

It should help alot with your 60 ft.. I ran the same tyre for a 1.6 60, but thats only if you have been spinning with the other tyres.
If you havnt, you need more boost off the line .

There is no question that the car needs more boost off the line but in saying that the tune hasn't been done to make the car 60ft nicely. Excellent advice though there mate, I will be taking the 16" MT's next time I go out. Upgraded tailshaft is going in tomorrow too that will allow me to stay on the line longer after a slightly longer burnout with the new slicks on.

It is good advice George. Anything to reduce weight provides a gain. It will be something that I will look at for sure mate.

Once the tailshaft goes in tomorrow we are basically on par Scotty!

I don't have an E85 tune. Honestly trying to avoid it right now. If I had E85 available at the bottom of my apartment then I'd have an E85 tune.

I'm going to have Blue Power lean on the tune a bunch more early on. Trying to get the car to 60ft better... I am going to need to try to also get my skirt off and really lean on the car off the line too

I run 1.75 in the 60' and my old shagger only does 12.4 et. I run 255R50 - 16 MT dot drag radials on bog stock BA steel rims. I do have a final ratio of 3.7 now but car did the 1.7's before I did that. Only makes 12# boost, and its 1.96t whatever that is in pounds? I recon the extra tyre there with a smaller rim gives more on the launch, only recon but, no proof. Fitting a 16" over brakes is an issue for some but.

Update to this, I have now run 11.11 @ 124.69 at Calder Park with Nitto NT05R at 25psi cold. Very sticky track. My tune isn't set up with much boost early so 60ft was a fairly quiet 1.71. Other FG's were getting 1.5's on the night.

I tried out the 255 x 16" ET's at Heathcote and couldn't get under 2.0x in the 60ft. Plenty of cars were struggling for grip though.

This was on the footbrake, handbrake combo. Just the footbrake alone would have the car spinning the slicks on the start line. Any more than that would have the car spinning through 1st and most of the way through 2nd on MT's and NT05R's.

I am interested in trying the MT 16's at Calder on a properly prepped track that is sticky and will hold the car and the boost

Mine has stock Ford brakes mate, not FPV brakes. I believe they don't fit over FPV brakes.

I had my 16 inch wheels widened an extra 1.5 inches, the mt's sit alot better on them compared to a stockie rim.

Thanks for the XR.

What was the damage for them to be widened? Are they ok structurally after being taken apart?

Yeh it was done professionally, the only draw back is the extra weight, your better off with a 17 alloy rim.
Cost me back then $110 per wheel.

No doubt you'd be struggling off the line mate! Big power from your ute!

I have 17" alloys already but have my NT05R's fitted to them. I think I will just race on those until they are finished up and then get myself some MT's after that.

Radials can hang on .. Plenty of 6/7/8/9/10 second cars on radials in the world .
