Hi Guys
I REALLY need some help. I had the usual "water in the oil" story last week on my little KA1300 Laser (1981) I pulled the head off expecting a blown head gasket but it was perfect!! However I found a little round aluminium plug and discovered that the head has an extrusion below the cam, between the first and second set of head bolts (it looks like a little volcano) and the blanking plug had blown out of it. Ford Spares say the head doesn't have a blanking plug!!!! However I found a brass cup (welsh plug I guess???) and whacked it in there and it seemed pretty tight. On re-assembly the sump filled with water !!! and there was plenty oil in the radiator too. The head is off again and the brass cup still looks tight ..however it must be leaking. Can anyone tell me what the correct way to fix this is???? All replies appreciated Chris |

without pictures its too difficult to diagnose
you need to take the head to an engine and head reconditioner to have that head pressure tested for internal cracks and that plug and a reface might cost approx $150 for your piece of mind

Duhh!!!! I never though about pics!! Ok here are two below. The piece that came out (it got sorta crunched a bit by the cam lobe when it came loose) and the place it came from and my attemped repair... the casted piece seems to be a taper from 19.1mm at the top to 17.3mm at the bottom and is around 10mm thick. I found a brass 18mm welch plug cup and wacked it in there (the grey stuff is Devcon Epoxy to try and help it seal. I'm wondering also if maybe aluminium expands more than brass???? If that's the case then water will leak past under pressure!!! Your help is much appreciated |

thanks for the picture
its just a casting plug for manufacture of the head at a guess the brass welsh plug would expand faster than the aluminium because if the thickness of the aluminium the source of the problem water leak may lie elsewhere the head reconditioner may find it for you after a pressure test

Hi Guys
The head pressure tested OK but they did say it was ancient!! (It's a 1981!!) I was just thinking now that I looked at the head gasket and it seemed OK so I just put the head back on the first time??? Silly move??? Can you reuse a head gasket??? It wasn't damaged and looked pretty good from the last time it was changed a year ago?? Chris |
