I replaced all (4) front ball joints today (boy! did that make a difference to the front end...)
I was lucky enough to borrow a mini-press from a guy who comes through work, so for those who haven't seen one (as I hadn't) here's a pic of it in action on upper and lower ball joints. Took about 30 minutes to remove and install per ball joint (that's with wheel, disc and caliper removed), although a few minutes per bjt was spent working out which adapters to use:- |

Most people just buy the whole hub and do it that way. In any case, glad the front end is better. GK

I like it. Wouldn't be hard to make one. One with a hydraulic bottle jack would be good.

Thats pretty awesome ronwest. They should have supplied these with the AUs from new, that would pretty much cancel out my entire list of irritations with AUs.

I found this alternative method in the B-series forum.

No disrespect Ron, your post (and the other replies) got me thinking there had to be something affordable out there for those of us without Jastel's fabbing and welding skills. I wouldn't mind trying to adapt the steering wheel puller that paid for itself the one time I needed it & has been gathering dust ever since... My wife's AU3 has been groaning over bumps & low-speed steering just like my AU1 did when it had a seized ball joint, and just today a new noise started, which I've tracked down to a shat left-front wheel bearing. If I have to pull enough bits off to replace a hub/bearing assy, I might as well go a bit further and do the ball joints on that side if I can do it all in situ. And while I've got the front end up on stands, I might as well do the other side too. It's up to 170,000km or so, so worth doing now & hopefully I won't have to worry about them again in the 6-7 years we'll probably keep the car.

yo can make yourself a small mini press out of an old small hydraulic car jack, pretty easily too ! , cheers.

Yeah that's always a risk. The B-series one worked fine for the poster, but there's also a post from someone who needed a 30-tonne press IIRC to get their lowers out. Worth trying IMHO and only my time lost if it fails.
