71 litres of fuel into a 68 litre tank

So i went to BP and filled up the FG Turbo with 70.8 litres of fuel, my tank is 68 litres. When i went in to fill up my trip computer said 25km to empty, so there was at least 2 litres of fuel still in the car. I told the guy behind the counter and he said to ring the boss tomorrow morning at 8. What would you guys do? I have the receipt and have also photocopied it as well, not sure what to do from here

Having said that, I've long suspected servos of being dodgy with their pumps, be an easy way to boost profits.

I've put 64 litres into a 68 litre tank with it still showing around 100 DTE, and a quarter on the gauge. And my trip and gauge are very accurate because I always manually calculate my economy.

Made me wonder how accurate the pump was.

Ive never been able to put close to capacity back into the tank, usually around 60L max ive been able to put in with between 40-80k's on DTE.

Perhaps get something like a 20L jerry can, something that should easily have the capacity rechecked whilst also being sizeable enough to show something wrong, and fill it up to check the pump.

Contact the manager in the morning and he will run a volume test on the pump concerned. If you feel the need arrange to meet him and run the test together.
If you have a receipt and the volume test proves their is a discrepancy then I would expect that you would be compensated.
The BP site manager will work with you to resolve your complaint.
If your not happy with the outcome you can lodge a complaint directly to BP Australia and it will be followed up.

It doesn't matter if my fuel gauge is calibrated or not, fact remains i "still" had fuel in the car, it wasn't empty and when the handle clicked it was at 70.8 litres. that's still 3 litres over what my tank holds plus the fuel that was still in there before i filled up. I didn't sit there and fill it up as far as i could have, i stopped at the click.

Was behind a guy at a Shell the other week. Was carrying on about 75 litres going into his Commodore that only had a 68 litre tank. I rolled my eyes thinking here we go, another cheapskate out to screw a few bucks...

Anyway, guy behind the counter goes out with a measuring beaker, comes back and confirms the pump is out of whack, and refunds the customer.

"Happens quite a bit" says the manager.

Surely the 68 litre capacity excludes the 10 odd litres of reserve that the gauge doesnt show?

I thought commodores do have a 75 litre tank?

Worked for them and calibrated many many pumps..
Hear this all the time but fact is 98% of pumps will actually give you more then you pay for, sure its only 50-100 ml per tank but more is more not less.

Only in the last month or 2 this came up on one of the current affair programs, it caught my eye when it came on because only about a week before i filled up at a servo and my limo took a shed load of fuel, more than i had ever got into the tank before.

I will give him a call in the morning but the thing is he can tell me whatever he wants over the phone. I wish i had time to go in and see for myself when he tests it.

If you are worried. Take a jerry can and fill it up. Then you can see how much fuel goes in it.

Rang the owner, accused me of call him a liar. Said they are calibrated every three months by the government and fuel readings are checked by them every day. Told me there were no discrepancies on Saturdays readings. I said there is no way you would notice 5-10 litres of fuel missing out of the 1000's of litres he would have sold on Saturday. I told him that even if i came in at empty it still shows 3 litres more than the car can take.

He even went to tell me that his ford has a 75 litre fuel tank even though ford say it's 68. I asked him if it's a ute, he said yes haha.

I'm not happy with his response at all, he didnt offer for me to come down and check him do a test on the pump either. What is the next step to take now?

fair trading. not for the few dollars compensation but people like this need to learn to deal with genuine complains properly. if he is that arrogant he needs to cop a big fine to teach him to have some ethics and to respect his customers

Exactly, this is why i am not happy. If he was wiling to co-operate or give me some decent customer service i would not have cared to be honest. Now he has my back up and i want to make sure something is done about it.

Got onto National Measurement Institute and they are going to test it now. Apparently i am the third caller this morning about that pump, will be interesting to see what comes out of it.

there is no way of the managers tampering with pumps. 99% of tanks also have digital readouts each night of how much fuel has been sold and a read out of what is left in the tank and they are accurate within 3 litres for a 20 000ltr tank. i know by W.A standards the pumps have to be accurate within 1 litre and tested every three months aswell as at random times. It would surprise you how many customers walk in to BP servos alone and claim that the pumps are wrong. if they gave in to every complaint they would go broke. also when the manufacturers test the car tanks for fuel capacity it is done on a SFL (Safe Fill Level) usually up to 5 litres less than what can actually fit in the tank.

I think to prove any issue you would need to go back to the petrol pump with a fuel container with a see through gauge of at least 10l capacity, and a video recorder.

You only have your word on the 25k left in the tank.

Yeh, completely agree with the guys that say test the pump yourself with video evidence, no escape
