Remember the signs people used to put on their cars.
(I was going to say old classics, but they were everyday cars then) I remember passing some of them almost every weekend. XW's, XY's, XA's, XB's Many of them had a hand written sign on the back window: PLEASE PASS RUNNING IN What the hell was all that about! Have you seen how Ford runs in their engines? By thrashing them in the factory to bed them in properly. But I know the real reason for the signs ... Back then, we all had to prove ourselves on the roads, and if we happen to line up with an old monaro at the lights, well we had a legit excuse! Sorry ... no go turkey! can't you read the sign! They were the good ol days...

I remember those signs. They used to drive at 60k's everywhere and had to keep the revs below 3000 rpm (or some other figure) It was good fun when you were in a mates car and running late and doing 60'ks on a road you normally drove at twice that speed and your mate refuses to go over 3000 rpm (or 60'ks)
These days I just try to keep varying the revs (by going up and down through the gears)

Sure is. It would be impossible to thrash a car around it as its probably only 50 metres long and lined by concrete blocks. And its bumpy as hell to stimulate any possible noises.

Hey if you spent the money back then you were quite inclined to listen to what the manufacturer said to do in the manual.....

There is still an argument follow a break in procedure all there is still controversy over the best approach. See http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm and
