Default EL XR6 Question

Hey,
Dad was looking at buying a nice EL Xr6, now this is where it gets interesting, the car has a leather interior in it, that the current owner believes was put in there from the factory from a special order. Was this available or is it possible that it may just be a dressed up ghia?

Has 5sp Manual
Leather Interior
XR with Venom Bar
Sunroof
Etc

Anyone able to help us out?
The car is in sydney so we have a friend going to check it out tomorrow, but before we transfer some money, want to make sure it actually is a XR6.

Cheers Shane

Leather wasn't available from the factory on XR Models. Perhaps the Original owner has put a Fairmont Ghia interior into it. 5 Speed manual wasn't available with Fairmont Ghia from the factory.

Venom bar is available aftermarket. The 5spd and Sunroof were available from the factory on all XR Models

Yeah, but it could always be a possibility that it got converted to a 5 speed to make it seem more like a mocked up XR.

I know the Venom is aftermarket but may have been put on there to make it look more XR like.

Actually seems it doesnt have climate control or anything, meaning i guess its not a ghia. Well it doesnt list Climate Control in the ad. Anyway to work out what it is from the Vin?

Model code for the EL XR's is 18735. Make sure you check all the Tickford specific things as well. I've seen an EL XR8 on carsales before with a leather interior, non XR colour and standard (not XR) ride height so be warry, though I reckon AdzELXR is probably right.

We have a guy checking it out for us today in a couple of hours.

Get your mate to write down the details from the compliance plate and vin (as mentioned before) to check out the numbers.

Check numbers on the plate with those on the chassis and engine.

Then do a REVS check to see if it is/was registered an an XR.

How much are they asking?

it is quite possible ghia interior was optioned from factory. It happens quite often where buyers demand a certain option. Of course it isn't a standard option. But that doesn't mean ford wont do it. Hell old the EF XR's that calder raceway and Sandown race way have. Are equiped with full LTD interior climate, control and instruments. All done by Ford.

Get the Vin number ring a Ford dealer and they should be able to tell you exactly what model it was sold as, when, and what dealer sold it.

Probably should have replied here earlier, to cut a long story short, we found out the
model number for the XR's, dad called the man up and told him it should be a certain number (made one up) and the man read it out and it was exactly what we had. So im assuming this means its definatly an xr? Dads headed down to sydney today and brought it so yeah.

We shouldnt be worried about it not being an xr no?

So even if it does turn out to be a ghia is that a problem?
Although by the sounds of what ive said it seems to be a XR yes.
Heres some pics by the way, off FM, will have to do till dad gets the
car back up to the coast.

The trim running down the side of the car is usually red on XRs - black ones if the car is red. Not difficult to change or paint though.
The chances of the guy turning a Fairmont Ghia into an XR6 (bonnet, headlights, 5 speed) are pretty slim - why would you bother. Looks like he just took some Ghia bits and put them in, whether it was optioned from the factory or done later. I think the Ghias would have softer suspension too.
The Ghia would have some fake wood in the trim too wouldn't it?
In the pictures here:
http://www.trueblueford.com/AndrewsELghia.html
of a Ghia I googled, the rear number plate surround is chromed, and the bumper inserts have chromed bits in them too.
Again, why would you take so much off a Ghia to make it look like an XR6? The cost alone would make it more feasable to sell one car and buy the other. So I'd say it's an XR6 with cosmetic tweaks.

Yeah, in the ad it says the door trim has been colored. And the number matching up like i said makes sense that it would be an EL XR6 yea?

Umm? Because this ones a damn nice car. I highly doubt the one in Ipswich has all the things this car has.
Just because theres a car of the same type somewhere closer but its not as good doesnt mean you just get that car.

Probably the same reason I drove 500kms to Melb for my last two cars. What I wanted was there, not here!

EL side moulds do not fill the recess int he doors , they just have a single strip.I think the EL Ghia's had the full moulding though.

I remember seeing that car for sale on Fordmods ages ago! From memory it did create a bit of discussion about its authenticity, but i cant remember the outcome of the discussion!

Try searching for the thread or ask on there about it.

But like others have said get the Vin and engine number ring up Ford and see what they tell you it was. Have you checked the user manual (if it came with it( that should also have its details and origanal dealer info in there.

If it was originally a Ghia it will have 4x power windows, climate control, carpeted kick panels, wood grain, velour sunvisors among other things.
If it doesnt have that its not a Ghia.

Yeah found the link the other day,
turns out the car dad brought had was
a car i had had pics of for ages and was always
in love with. And it will be mine in 6 months :

This is what the guy who was selling it on FM said when asked
if it was an XR,

'U r rite i didnt do it myself the reason for me saying "full t.ford b.kit" was that thats what i was told by the person who sold it to me. As for the rest its definatly a genuine xr and an xr that would give 95% of all xr's of this shape a good kik up the a***! (as far as condition, options, power, mods)'
