Exclamation Catastrophic Engine Failure

This is a catastrophic failure of the duratec engine.

This photo was taken looking up from under the engine, just behind the oil filter.

This happened in my friend's 05 LS CL Focus Sedan, just last night. The car has only done 60,000kms and the engine has destoryed itself. I have only seen this twice on a car - both turbo cars with high-kms' and some severe flogging - and I am very shocked at this. As you can see from the photo, there is a hole in the block with a stress fracture just left of it as well. We're not going to find out the correct diagnosis for a while, but I think the engine has thrown a rod.

I would hope that there was a build defect in the engine, but with the amount of quality checks that the enignes have probably been subjected to... I'm just not sure...

Woah. That's unbelievable. I dare say your mate isn't gonna be too happy about that. Are Ford planning on doing a full rundown and analysis of the car?

Sorry to see it mate. That's just horrible.

Yes I have experienced that before out in a rally forest. It's called positive crankcase ventilation.

How cool is it when you are belting along... and all that smoke comes out from either sides of the car like you were on a nascar circuit

Ive seen it a few times... all fairly new engines... non turbo... revved far to high
Not my driving btw

I heard during one rally a team DNFed due to "electrical problems" A conrod came through the block and knocked the alternator off.

That's like telling your service crew that the door mirror broke because the car fell on it.
