I remember many years ago I was in a carpark and saw a car attempting to reverse but they appeared to be unsure of the amount of room behind their car. So I thought I'd do the right thing and guide them. As we all know the normal process is to use hand signals and tell people 'more, more, a little more, OK that is far enough'. On this day while standing behind said car, I started with the slow hand waving but before I had a chance to respond, the driver gave it a decent right boot and BANG straight into the other car! An elderly couple got out and started abusing me. I was left speechless as I stood there having just witnessed the stupidity. Fortunately the damage was very minor.
Anybody have other 'good intentions gone wrong' stories?

one of my friends helped an elderly neighbour by opening his garage door for him as he was parking. He proceded to run her over and then blame her for being in the way. Subsequently he has had his license revoked on age/health grounds.

Indeed you have to be very very careful doing a good deed, even sitting in traffic and waving someone on to come out from a side street can end up going majorly wrong, or flashing someone to overtake, i think the old saying applies, if in doubt......... dont.

A girl at work was waved through by a truck only to get T-boned. The car was a mess and fortunately there was nobody in the front passenger seat.

Yea got to be so careful in situations like that, only the guy waving you through knows your there and everyone else is expecting you to obey road rules.

I helped a guy push his car through an intersection while walking home from work one night.
After we got it into a side street he told me he had ran out of petrol and wanted to know where the closest servo was. I told him it was only about 500 metres up the road and that they probably sold fuel containers also. He then asked me if I could go and buy a container and fuel and bring it back! I said "why wouldn't you go and buy it"? And he said he didn't want to leave his car unattended because the door didn't lock but would reimburse me when I got back. I told him I wasn't doing that and he said "well thanks for nothing". What a nice pr%^k he was. |

I gave a hitchhiker a lift, they stole my watch sitting in the centre console.
Gave another hitchhiker a lift, when they hopped out, they kicked out a tie down strap that I subsequently needed. Passed a hitchhiker in the dark. Went further up the road where I could turn the truck and trailer around. Came back and he said he didn't want a lift. |

The onus is on the person operating the vehicle even if someone's good intentions are there. It is up to the driver to use sensible judgment as to whether they take a strangers word for granted or use their own common sense to make a call.
Blaming someone's good intentions for your poor operation of a vehicle does not waive your own accountability.

Either way, the guy should still have been appreciative of the effort in stopping to help.

He should have just given you the money up front and trusted you and not the other way round where you had to trust him. I would have helped him if he'd handed the cash over otherwise I would have refused as well. The servo is only 500 metres away plus as Bevsta007 said, it’s not like anyone was going to drive it away. |

It always makes me wonder why people run their cars empty. Did the fuel gauge work?

Tuesday night 6.30 pm, raining in peak hour traffic the missus spotted a guy on a pushbike crossing the road ahead, she slowed and stopped, the guy rode the pushy at her then slid it into the front of the car,got up and kicked the crap out of front LH guard then tried to punch through the windscreen and only stopped when he saw her on her mobile. Police believe he was on ice. That is an expensive act of courtesy and good intentions gone wrong.

This story happened 9yrs ago and my mates still take the pi$$ out of me about it.
I was talking to a friend (actually brothers friend) and he mentioned that a co-worker was getting married and was big Ford fan. He asked me if I would be willing to use my Typhoon as the wedding car because it would mean so much to him - so I agreed, I figured it was in the local area and I could talk with my mate about cars for an hour or two while the wedding took place. Friday night I spend a few hours washing and polishing the car for Saturdays wedding, I have to be at the back of a local motel at 1pm for the pick-up. At around 11am I ring my mate to see if he will be meeting me at the motel or at the church shortly after - his wife answers the phone and informs me that he and his brother have gone away camping for the weekend! WTF!!!! His wife then informs me the guy getting married isn't his friend just a guy he knows from work. To summarize I end up spending 4hrs with a bride, her father and a group of people I've never met before, driving them around the countryside, waiting for the ceremony, off to the river for photos then onto a club for the reception. The groom never said a word to me but the bride and her father did say thanks. My brothers friend did ring to apologise a week later but I've never had anything to do with him since. |

i was on the other side once, i put my boat in and when i went to get the boat back out the tide was out and there was sand over the ramp and my old EB could not get it out without digging holes, so i remembered trick my dad told me and that was a tie a rope to the tow bar and trailer and pull the trailer up from the carpark area until the trailer was on dry land and hook it back up.
i started doing this and then a group of 6 guys came over and said "we will help" they pulled the boat up the ramp by hand and ran the tow hitch into my boot lid left a nice dent and smashed the spoiler. what could i do? they all walked away pretty quick

A number of people have told me stories of road train truckies pulling over in the outback and waiving them through to overtake only to find a car coming on the other side and having a near-miss.

Years ago a female friend of mine was driving up Mona Vale Road in Sydney in the pouring rain. She observed in the misty windscreen up ahead a hitch hiker with a Gar Bag for a rain coat standing there with his thumb out.
She passed him and pulled over about 20yards up the road. He came trotting up to the car and she powered down the window about 3 inches, leaned across and said, "Where are you off to?" He responded with ".." (what ever the place was). So she said, "Thanks, just interested.' wound the window up and drove off.
