They would probably claim 'commercial in confidence'

Don't fear. I'll be the guinea pig! and I have the perfect test car, the 3v 5.4L.

Currently has 83,000kms on the clock. I fill it with BP Ultimate only. At 90,000kms I'll do the dreaded spark plug change. That will be the ultimate test... stay tuned....

There is additives in every brand fuel now. That's what differentiates one companies fuel from the next. 90percent of fuel is imported. It is all the same. Except for different additives.

Does Shell have an additive?.
In the UK I think they call it V Power in their premium diesel.

Won't make an ounce of difference to build up in the valve stems etc - as you need fuel wash over these areas to clean them. You don't get this type of wash with a direct injection engine..

The only 'stem' that carbons up is the exhaust and that one probably less now with the improved combustion.

Have a google search. It's mainly the inlet valve that gets carboned up - due to oil vapours from the PCV being deposited on them & getting baked on (due to no fuel wash).
On a direct injection engine, the only cleaning that the fuel/additive can do is to the injectors/piston/ring land areas.

The only valves I had to clean were the exhaust ones .
The inlets were air cooled.

A local Melbourne company makes and supplies some interesting fuel and oil additives, the company is called Fuel Treat Australia, they supply the likes of Nissan and Hyundai as parts of their servicing.

I've used a few of their products, the oil flush actually works unlike the Wynns crap you buy from SCA/Bursons/Repco.

The product is called 'Purge-EF', we thought it was total crock of **** until it worked on an abused EL Falcon we tested it on, it completely stopped the lifter noise.

They do an injector cleaner too.

A right dose of 'salts' it seems.

I remember in the g.o.ds that you'd worry about removing the carbon 'seal' that would stop excessive oil burning.

Interesting. I've always been a big fan of BP Ultimate whilst I had my WRX. Having done loads of dyno testing between different fuels, I always found BP Ultimate the best. So I still have the missus WRX running on BP Ultimate but lately she's been complaining that the amount of k's she gets from a tank is declining. I've gotta do some testing to see if there's an issue with the O2 sensor or something else. Or these new additives do not agree with the current tune in the car.

I had been thinking of getting the car tuned for Vortex 98 instead (even though it and BP Ultimate were very similar) as it is usually cheaper plus we get the 4 cent discount. I've been using Vortex 95 in my XR50 with no issues.

Thanks for posting!

In Old Blighty there are a lot that rave about Shell V-Power diesel but I've never heard of the 'big V' used with diesel pumps out here......it seems to be Shell's 'vanilla' diesel.

So.. they have added some kero to the diesel.. and some toluene (or maybe a bit extra xylene) to the 98...

You have to love marketing people.

** as per two posts above. I agree with bp 98 being the best of the fuels. I think it has tons of xylene in it and pretty much never pings.

Use 98 RON only and usually BP or Costco so this works for me.

This new blend has caused issues with E85 compatible VE-VF Holdens.

The issue is when doing a cold start the car starts chugging for 4-5 seconds. it's because the the E85 Flex sensor is chucking in more fuel thinking it's ethanol.

A fix to 95 Octane has fixed it for all involved cars. ethanol is known to be a cleaning agent. so there it is, the new ingredient could be ethanol

If it is patented then we should be able to get hold of the patent and see what's in it?

This is interesting to read. I certainly hope they haven't put ethanol in the Ultimate.

In the UK Shell have Nitro Plus diesel and petrol as their premium (and most preferred it seems) fuels.....hmmm, wonder what happened to the V Power brand.
