Hi Guys,
After a bit of advice for a mate. he's choosing one of these two 4x4 utes. 1. Mitsubishi Triton 3 litre V6 - 185,000 kays $5k changeover on his trade in. 2. Nissan Navara 2.3 TD - 135,000 kays $7k changeover. I don't know the year of each of these, the phonecall from my mate was pretty quick. He said that the Nissan drove much better and had heaps more power on takeoff, and that the V6 felt a bit sluggish. I said I'd go the Nissan. Was this sound advice for my mate do you think? Are these 2.3 engines any good? Cheers, GK

If its the D40, there have been a few engine issues - something to be aware of since its out of warranty.

2.3ltr?? Nissan don't make a 2.3, think you must mean the 2.5ltr

I still disagree. I stuffed my back from piloting one of those around. The Patrol we had was a bit better, and the Landcruisers were the best of the lot.

all 4x4 utes ride harsher than a coil sprung ute or wagon. I would go the Nissan personally. The mitsubishi v6 is an underpowered, fuel guzzling crap box that prone to blowing head gaskets ( I work on them alot ;) )

d22 old shape 3 litre turbo diesel strong as ox ... d40 new shape 2.5 turbo diesel go hard and heard no issues ,and is definately better than the mitsi .

We have three D40's in the fleet where i work and i had one for 12mths.
We have never had an issue with them and they do see some rugged railway access tracks in country Victoria. I now have the next size up Navara and god help anyone who tries to take that off me when the lease is up! |

The V6s in the Triton are a reasonable unit but they are quite underpowered compared to the opposition. Only around 130kw if I remember and 250Nm.
Diesels are always better for hard work. |

Why don't you go onto a 4x4 forum and search around, for example, http://www.4wdaction.com.au/forum/
FWIW the 3.0 ltr Diesel Nissan as fitted to the Patrol (not sure if this same engine is fitted to the Navara) has a reputation of being a grenade... |

Mate, i work on 4x4's and sell them also. I'd go for the t/d navara every time. The zd30 engine had some issues in the GU Patol, but it was intercooled and working very hard in a heavier vehicle. havent heard of many dramas in the Navara range. As others on here have said, the Mitsubishi V6 is a gutless fuel guzzler and can be prone to head problems. sounds like he preferred the navara to drive anyway...

I had a petrol 2003 triton GL/X (i think - it was the luxo version? with two tone paint green over silver)... Was a company car... and a great car... 4x4 dual cab
Took it offroading plenty of times... managed to drive it so deep into muck that the water was over the bonnet a couple of times... no snorkel... it copped so much hard driving, and it never missed a beat... If I was paying with my own money - it would be a tough call... but I really enjoyed the Triton... I had it for about 40,000km... I suppose the question is what does your mate want to do with it... Most people that have these type of cars swear by the turbo diesel... but i reckon that the v6 petrol mitsu had plenty of punch... Either way I think they could potentially fit very well with your mate... But - all I can remember is positive things and good times from my Triton... so for this reason alone... my vote goes to the triple diamond....
