Had the opportunity to go out onto Port Philip Bay the other day and got on board this...
   The below image shows the boat we went out in, it's approx. 8-9 metres long, just for a size comparison  The next image shows the draft of the ship. They submerge the ship down to 23 metres and then using 3 tugs towed the rig over the ship and then raised it by pumping out the water they used to submerge it. Impressive sight I must say!!! its pretty amazing how something so big can be transported around.
imagine sitting in the meeting when they first thought of doing something like that. "lets build an oil rig the size of a town block and then move it to the other side of the world"  "how will you move it  ""lets build a ship that is big enough then we can sink the ship, put the rig on and refloat the ship  " "yeah... ok."

Now the opposite. This blew my mind when I first saw it. Didn't know if it was 1 ship or 2. Then I thought maybe 1 sinking. I eventually worked it out  While it was submerged, some poor numbnuts nearly took his boat over the deck. For size reference, see the forklift and guys on the deck (after they raised it) below  And a shot from the company's website of a holed ship on the deck  Can you imagine watching that or Matty's navigate a huge swell. JG I'm sure you were joking. I'd guess they use the forks to move the supports / stays / braces. What else would they do? |

And when it all goes wrong, Angola 2006...
       Having been in the industry for 18 years (11 as Master) i have 1000s of pictures of stuff you would never believe could float, but if you know your way around ships stability most things can be worked out... FgNewbie....the piggy back of the US Warship....its the USS Cole after having a hole blown in her side by terrorists in Yemen in 2000...

Holy crap I never knew such ships existed. It would have been a sight to see for sure.
I always like seeing these things as it is proof of what great things we humans are capable of doing in times when a lot of the time we hear of all the bad things that we are capable of doing. Fairly sure that might be the ship (or at least the style of ship) the RAN plan to use to transport the hulls of the future HMAS Canberra and HMAS Adelaide from Ferrol to Adelaide for fitting out.
