Help choosing a new 5 door hatch for my Mum

My mum is looking at updating her car later this year. Requirements 5 door hatch & auto. Also she is not interested in Korean cars. She will be trading her 2000 Mirage manual that has been a great little car. So anyone that owns one of the cars on the list or who has driven one quite a bit eg work car. Or is a tech & has had experience working on some of the models love to hear your feedback. I have left the Ford Fiesta off my list as being a fordforum I didnt want to get a skewed result. It will be a car that she looks at though. To be honest though not that she has driven any of them as yet but she seems to be leaning toward the Honda Jazz & Toyota Yaris at present. I have put the VW Polo on the list as insurance price is good but im assuming servicing would be dearer than the others. I know that the Suziki Swift has crusie control but I dont think Yaris has & im unsure re the Jazz. (for the models that offer 1.3L & 1.5L it will be the 1.5L model that is looked at)

Polo. It obliterates the competition. Best quality, best looks (IMO), lowest fuel consumption, best resale value.

How good is the resale? My dad's gf has an '01 Polo 1.4 16V, old shape (looks similar to a Mk4 Golf). 70,000km odd, 5 years old, can sell it for 15k. Most small Jap cars are 15k new.

It's an automatic 1.4 petrol, with 3 of us in the car (me 112kg, my dad 80kg and her about 55kg) plus luggage, in summer, with the a/c on, we went for a trip to Canberra, 25L took us there, drove us around there for 3 days, drove is back to Sydney. 4.35L/100km it used on average on that trip.

I asked the AFF Admin to put Mazda2 in poll as I forgot2 & cant edit. IMO I think the Polo looks the best also in the petrol model there is nothing in economy between it Jazz & Colt. The only thing mum was thinking about the Polo was dearer service costs?

I just bought myself another car and got a new Golf 2.0 TDI.
You will be suprised of the performance of the petrol and diesel engines.

My diesel has shocked many of my friends about the performance 103kw wth 320Nm of torque at 1750rpm.

70,000 km old 01 Polo will give you 8 grand if your lucky..

Not sure where you get the 15 k from.

If i was buying tomorrow it would be the Fiesta, its cheaper and its certainly a top car when it comes to build quality...

IMO the best buy is probably the $19,990 Polo 1.6 Match, five-door hatch, 1.6litre 77kW 4cyl from the Golf MkV, Six-Speed Automatic from the Golf MkV.

I actually almost bought a Polo TDI 1.9 before my Fiesta (and it was my first choice) but couldn't get finance so I bought my WP Zetec outright.

Mazda 2 or Honda Jazz here. I drove test drove just about all of the above (most of them in auto)and they were the two i liked and funnily enough, i disliked the Fiesta (mainly because of driver positioning) and i hated the Echo (Echo then) with a vengance

If you handle the van syling the Mazda 2 is a great car and Jazz was very practical (but expensive). That being said ive heard good things about the Swift. In the end though id lean towards the 2.

None of those cars are dealer cars, they're all private sales. Dealer cars have prices on those things closer to the 17k range. They won't get that much though, the dealers, but 12k for an A03 1.4 16V? You'll get it no problems.

100km/h at 1800 rpm, you will get 4L per 100 on the hwy - petrol 4 cyls get crappy highway economy cos they are revving at 3000

5 star safety, fold down arm-rests, good sound system with controls on steering wheel, rear air vents, optional leather/heated seats, - heated mirrors, auto-dimming rear view mirror, rain sensing wipers

If on a budget, the Fiesta is a pretty good car. A shame the Polo TDi isnt available with the DSG auto tranny,

I bought my Moter a Yaris, and she adores it. No mechanical issues whatsoever and is damn cheap on the juice.

My AU is still cheaper though.

Golf 2.0 TDI starts at $32,990. That is alot more expensive then the rest of the cars, and it is also one size class up.

Otherwise yes, I agree, it is an awesome car.

PS - The DSG isn't an auto.

well its a automatic shifting manual which has the benefits of an auto, and the fuel economy of a manual - unlike the Astra automatic which uses 1.5L per 100 more than the manual

I agree VW Golf TDI is a great car but she is after something smaller eg Mazda2 at the biggest (awaiting AFF admin to add the Mazda to the poll) & also she would only be considering petrol models (although I agree torque & economy is great in the new generation diesels)

I'd go the swift, my mum has one & they're quite a good little car. Very fuel efficient & go quite hard

The VW would hold it's value, although a bit more expensive for servicing. I'd go the Mazda 2, but only because I have a 3 and it's a great car (well it was before I kept smashing it into things)
