IDE cable for an old hard drive

Just a quick one for the more technically minded:-

I have had a mate remove an old hard drive from my old laptop and I wish to extract the data from it and put it on our new computer. I am told I need an IDE cable with a USB end on it so I can plug it in, however I am not sure whether I would need to provide power to the harddrive before I could see and remove the data. My limited knowledge tells me that the USB connection should power the harddrive, is this correct?

This is the cable I am looking at, I dont need anything flash as it will be a once off job. Once the data has been taken off it I will be binning the old HD.

That link should give you everything to do it. But it being a 2.5" the USB should be enough to power it.

I've got an external IDE case. Basically, I removed an old IDE drive from a PC during an upgrade and purchased one of these cases to house that drive. Now I use it as an external drive to transfer files.

It's called "Blue Eye O2"

i bought one of those to do a similar thing.
it comes with a power supply that plugs to the HDD, then just plug in the HDD and then USB to computer

You could buy something like this
Silver 2.5in HDD External Enclosure, Aluminium, USB2.0, for IDE drives
MIT-HD25-U2

Listed in the above site. This means you can keep the drive as a backup, and it just plugs into the USB. Turns it into an external hard drive.

I use these on all older hard drives.
