Default Petition to end HD-DVD/Blu Ray format War

Since Blu Ray has 83% of the High Def market, and only two movie studios to full switch over, if you are like me, and just want HD-DVD to just be dead and done so we can all enjoy more High Def movies, click this

I wouldn't bet on it, HD-DVD is doing alright in the USA. They are going to drag this "war" on for a while.

Well it wouldn't suprise me, how much advertising for HDDVD do you see in Australia compared to Blu-ray? I have not seen ONE advert about HDDVD.

Wasnt one of them going to ban porn from using the format. That would make them the choice for a lot of people with kids.

When the war is over and the dust has settled, I'll move in and buy a revised edition of the winning format player. I don't give a toss what format that is.

I don't know where you heard that HD-DVD is doing well in the US. Blu Ray is outselling it over 5:1, everyone at Best Buy and Circuit City are telling customers to get Blu Ray, Target in the US dropped HD-DVD all together a few months ago. Blockbuster only support Blu Ray. For a while I thought dual formats was the way to go, but Samsung have axed the dual format player, leaving LG to make the only dual player on the market. The player sucks, even if you did like LG as a brand. I do agree they will drag it out as long as they can though, but it's Universal and Paramount that need to sign the papers to take HD-DVD off life-support.

hd is dead... give it 12 months tops and nothing will be available, i expect a run out sale from places like jb on all hd stuff in the enxt 6 months...
its a better format in my opinion, butit wasnt marketed or supported anywhere near good enough...
and yes as stated aove the dual format player was having trouble with having to read both formats, it needed 2 seperate systems, which is why it never went well...
and also the consoles going with bluray was a big factor...

My money is on Blu-Ray.

The biggest factor would have been the playstation 3. If not the cheapest Blu Ray player on the market, and considering you get the top next gen gaming console primarily.

Should we make Toyota the only car manufacturer for the world too?

We need competition in the marketplace and if Sony take control of the high definition disc format then don't expect competitive pricing of any blu disc components. One of the great things about the HD-DVD format is that the discs are region free, we won't be bound to Australian retailers fixed pricing schemes, limited stock etc.

I'm enjoying my HD-DVD players

Ive done some reading, 0.65 v 0.85, 0.1mm deep layer v much deeper, Blu ray holds more data on the disc. Bloody gobbledygook.

What I want to know is will my collection of DVD's still be playable on either format machine?

US figures and only for the first week of January and that only due to BR players being given away for free with TV purchases. Until Warner went BR exclusive, it's been a lot closer for player sales. And the movie split has been even closer depending on the title releases at the time.

I can't see HD DVD "winning", and that is unfortunate given it is a finished format and for us Aussies being regoin free, makes it possible to get cheaper movies from the US.

I thought the ACCC bought some ruling about region coding on DVD players, that meant any players that enforced a region code could be breaking some part of the trade practices act or the like?

Surely this would carry over to BluRay, meaning the players should be region free.

I told a friend with a PS3 to write to the ACCC about it not playing a region 1 dvd, they thought I was being stupid, I was serious though.

Its not the same thing. Its not about competition but about having one format available. 2 will never be viable as per the BETA vs VHS. Those that bought BETA were the unfortunates simular to those that have new HD-DVD. Sony with the backing of Warner and whether its better or not, which isnt in discussion, is too clever in the marketing dept!

Haha. No. Just say you have Blackhawk down on DVD. It is around 5gb maybe. Get it on bluray, and it is over 40gb. Thats the kind of quality and other extra crap you are getting.

Can I tell the difference? Nope. Its just an added bonus with a PS3 for me.
