Default Rice...

I was at Dan Murphys yesterday and it finally happened! In the car park was a beautifully done 70s Mazda coupe. I looked at, and admired, a Japanese car!
As someone who has only ever had eyes for chrome bumpered muscle cars, this is a huge shift in my automotive cognition...

Nothing wrong with classic Jap cars in my book.

I've had about 3, all 60's and 70's Toyotas.

They used to make them with real steel once too.

Dan Murphys allows you to drink their stock in the store now?

Some time back in a McDonalds carpark I found myself saying something I never thought I would ever say in a million years...
"Now that's a really nice 120Y coupe..."

Nothing wrong at all with old Jap stuff...of course I own a 1982 Celica...but there are numerous makes of stuff from back in the 1970's and early eighties that are very interesting.

Being "a car enthusiast" and limiting yourself to one maker...and sometimes even then only one or two models from that maker...means you are missing out on a lot of fun...

I remember seeing an advert for a local spare parts business that was advertising those four inch cannon exhaust cans which said "Add power!"...they clamped onto a standard 2" exhaust but had a four inch exit.
I gleefully went in and asked about them, playing dumb, and watched the salesman haltingly trying to explain exactly how sticking one of those things on the end of your exhaust system "made more power"...

I used to be the same. Hated Japanese (and Euro) cars with a passion. As I got older I found I appreciate almost all cars .. they are just "different" not necessarily better/worse.

I've actually got a few favorites .. probably the first generation Nissan GT-R "Hakosuka" would be one of the easiest for me to rattle off and high on my wish list ..

.. and this is coming from someone who wears an "American Motors" cap everywhere.

Some people should really open their minds to things and who knows, they might end up having some fun.
Looking back, my favourite car that I have owned is, of course, my old VH Charger.

But you know what car I really look back on fondly, which was just plain "buckets of fun", which I would love to own again...?
This one...

A tiny little old 1953 Austin A30...underpowered, tiny 850cc engine, but loads of fun to drive around and it drew so much attention it wasn't funny. Girls loved it!

European cars? I absolutely lust after one particular Euro sedan...but it's not BMW, it's not Mercedes, it's not any of the supercars they make on that continent...
It's one of these...

That is a shocker. Why anyone would spend a cent doing up a 120Y is beyond me

There are some really cool old school Japanese cars, I'd happily own a 240Z or a Celica fastback.

Anyone with a genuine interest in their car will also appreciate similar enthusiasm for other makes. It is the commitment to maintain and improve or to take the time to keep something stock that is the main element.

I can appreciate a MKII Corona, an Alfa Romeo Montreal, anything really.

An old mate of my brother, with a bit of money on the side, he was about 18, grabbed himself a Datsun (grr Nissan) 200 SX. Blue, finish flag checker inserts in the seats, cassette player etc. I was 16 then, wow, what a nice car.
I always figured, if you stuck a warm 2 litre in the super light weight 120Y, you`d win all the traffiic light drags.

Here is what a crappy 120Y can do when put in the right hands. Vehicle was built by the driver's navigator (Monty Sufferen) - you may have heard of him George Fury. The lap sprint was a closed section of forest in Canberra.
