Victoria Rego and Rwc.

I am from Qld and not sure of the Rego transfer requirements etc. I have opportunity to buy a car with Vic Rego to sept 2010, but dont need a RWC . Can I buy this car without a RWC and still have the Rego until it runs out etc?.
EG. Can I transfer the rego to my name without a Rwc?. Hope this makes sense.. Thanks.

Whenever there is a sale of a motor vehicle and registration is transferred from one beneficial owner to another owner you will need a RWC

Only time you dont need a RWC is when you purchase it unregistered. Then you need permits to drive it around till you get it in a condition to be able to get registered!

Short answer - no you cant transfer remaining registration to your name without a RWC

The current owner needs to surrender his registration plates at Vicroads and he will be reimbursed some of his unused registration charges

a victorian RWC wouldn't be any good in QLD. you'd have to get a QLD authorised issuer rwc??

In the state of Vic you can purchase a vehicle and transfer it directly to your name. How ever the proviso is that unless you front to vic roads ith a current RWC with-in 14days they will suspnd the rego. I did this with 2 of my previous cars due to the owners having pension concession and wantin to use it for the next car.

The problem here is that to get a RWC in another state you would have to get the car there to get it examined, and to get it there you need a RWC

they dont. we brought my old man a torana from nsw that had its yearly inspection done not long before purchase, but still had to get a rwc done in victoria before going to vic roads

The only time this does not apply is when you are driving an unregistered vehicle to or from either an authorised business for the purpose of obtaining a RWC or VicRoads for inspection. You need to have an appointment at the destination though or you'll be fined. This isn't widely acknowledged so for the sake of $30 I'd get the permit so you don't get hassled by the fuzz, but it is legal.

You can also use an unregistered vehicle permit to drive a vehicle interstate if you request the permit for that use. When bringing a vehicle from interstate it doesn't need it to be registered in any state and it doesn't require an unregistered vehicle permit provided the journey starts from interstate and finishes in VIC. It might be the same for QLD however you need a permit to leave VIC and you may need one to cross NSW (not 100% sure on that one).

Let's get this clear, so you don't cop a $567 fine.

This is a direct paste from the Road Safety (Vehicle) Regulations 2009.

130. Exemption for vehicles used for the purpose of obtaining registration

(1) A vehicle is exempt from the requirement to be
registered while it is being used on a highway—
(a) for the purpose of obtaining registration and
the vehicle is proceeding by the most direct
or convenient route to the nearest place at
which registration under the Act is carried
out; or
(b) for the purpose of attending an office of the
Corporation to have a defect notice cleared.

Nowhere here do I see take it to a place to get a RWC.

(2) A vehicle is exempt from the requirement to be
registered if its registration has been suspended
under regulation 114(a) and the vehicle is being
used on a highway by a Licensed Vehicle Tester
for the purpose of examination and testing.

So unless you are a licensed tester, you need a permit.

(3) In this regulation—
direct or convenient route includes—
(a) the route to the nearest place at which
the vehicle can be weighed or inspected
for the purpose of obtaining
registration; and
(b) the route from that place to the place of
registration.
(4) A vehicle is not exempt under subregulation (1)
from the requirement to be registered while the
vehicle is being used on a highway for the purpose
of—
(a) having the vehicle repaired; or
(b) obtaining a certificate of roadworthiness for
the vehicle.

I think 4 sums it up.

Thanks for the heads up, I hadn't seen that change! Funny that an LMCT tester can drive a vehicle unregistered, but you can't get it to them in the first place without a permit! Don't know who thought that up.

Like I said though, for $30 I'd be getting a permit either way.

The Road Rules and the associated Regs are Statutory Rules so check that box and choose R.

Victoria has just had a change in names for Traffic Coppers.

There is now the State Highway Patrol (apparently the best of the best).

and the local traffic coppers are TMU (Traffic Management Unit).

The TMU is the equivalent of the NSW HP.

However, we are all the same.
