Understandably emotive subject for so many of us is Australia Day commemorated on Jan 26th . Not going to touch on that because personal views need to be respected on a myriad of levels there.
I do agree the birthday of our country as an independent nation in it's own rite is lost and forgotten about among New Years Day celebrations. In hindsight the forefathers who decided on Jan 1 1901 could have thought about that but times were very different then. |

If they had chosen 26/01/1901 for Federation, it would have been very insulting.
01/01/01 was a good choice of date - normally it's only ever bad government news on that day (tax & price increases). |

Pretty sure that day was selected because it was the first day of the 20th century. A new modern nation being created on such a day is actually quite clever and well conceived. Unfortunate though that it is a little lost in the shadow of New Years Day.
