The trans-am people might be getting confused about is the one with the eagle on it, similar front and rear ends; ill see if I can find a pic.

EDIT: this one, think it was called the Bandit or something

doin a bit of googlin it seems to b a third gen trans am (82 - 92).
its also probably a 3.8 v6 producing somewhere between 190-225 hp depending on its options and year but that seems to b the power range.
But some of the older models had a 4.9L turbocharged engine called the 301.

Sounds nasty :dr_Evil:

When I used to live overseas we had an '89 Z28 Camaro, which had the 5.7L V8, and it was an absolute beast, we sold that one and later got a '92 Camaro RS, with a 5.0L V8, and it was weak as ****. In the right colour, with decent wheels I reckon they were a decent looking car, the '92 was the best looking though, the earlier 80's ones looked pretty ordinary.

edit. I can't see any reason to buy one with anything other than a 5.7, cos without the power, it's just not pretty enough to justify it!

So anyway, in response to the original question, it's a late 80 / early 90's Chevy Camaro RS. Which would have the 5.0L V8. The IROC-Z mentioned above is the Z28, which had the decent 5.7L engine.

yeah i would have said '86 Iroc-Z. The one above is an '80 turbo model, small block i think they were. A friend has a '79 Trans Am, the one from Smokey and the Bandit. The non-turbo model had a non-functional reverse scoop on it with 6.6 liter decals.

The 4.9 Turbo was a junk engine, and was only in the 2nd gen F-body for a year or two.
The 3rd Gen TransAm had an optional Turbo 3.8L V6 and made a claimed 250hp (actually had a bit more) It was unofficially faster than the Corvette of the same year. I think they ran as quick as low 13s stock and 11s with a few tweaks.

There is a couple in perth ive seen around, although they are a camaro they look really cheapish in terms of build. not very expensive to buy in the US also for a common model. should have at least reconised the chevy badge on it. lol

This isn’t an IROC Z’s a**hole. I think you’ll find that it’s an RS (Rally Sport) Camaro. IROC’s have a different bonnet, wheels, etc.

why call us a$$holes? the reason this thread exists is because we are unsure, plus dont forget that this car has been aroun for around 20 years, more than enough time to change bonnet and wheel combos. and just so u know i looked at some cars on carsguide.com and there is an identical one labelled as an 89 camaro iroc-z, maybe u think different due to the shabby quality of the pics, im no car expert but i can play the memory game where i say yes that looks the same. keep the unjustified attitude to yourself thanks very much

Back when I was looking for one last year, going price for a 3rd Gen Camaro (84-89) was about $10-14k in Qld. Always 4 or 5 for sale. You'll pay a bit less for the carbie version, but they're gay. Pontiac Trans Ams (luxo version with the better TPI 5.0 V8) were going for a couple more.

Still love the shape, but they're slow and they're getting old, and I haven't seen a decent RHD conversion in one yet.

Wot sort of problems do they have with the RHD conversions? Some of the ones up for sale have only just over 100k's on their speedos, considering my ED 'mont has 260K 110 isnt too bad is it?

Mosman69, we actually imported and converted the '92 RS we had and sold it after a while. It looked stunning, it was an awesome metallic teal colour with T-top roof, and was in great nick. Some guy from Cobram bought it for his son for the lofty price of ~17k. This was back in around 1998 too. There's a pretty shabby looking manual '84 with the V6 for sale around the corner from me for 6k. Basically, they're not worth much. For a really good one with the 5.7 you wouldn't want to pay over 20k these days, and that's top dollar.
