Default lowering my AU

hey did a search, cant find squat to help me here.


how much will it cost me to lower my AU and where is the best place to get it done.... just a little lower than XR.

i dont really want to fork out HEAPS but yeah..

If you are thinking just springs.. id say around $240 for the springs alone. I tried looking into it as well but couldn't find any info so far thats the best iv come up with.

have u got a picture of the car with th elows in it?

i want to get my tyres inline with the guards pretty much, then it will still clear the kerb at work easy lol

its pretty dicey trying to do it your self isnt it?

$400 just seems a bit much thats all.....

i want to do somehting on the weekend... either lowering ... or exhaust.....hmmm

Spring Compressors...$50
Wheel alignement...$70

Cost of lowering... $360
Look on your face when you bounce all over the road from shocks not up to the job and the insides of your tyres tearing themselves to pieces...PRICELESS!

Now to do it right... you need springs, shocks (at least rear but front and rear is better), camber kit and a wheel alignment. At the cheapest.. about $800 or so. Then you'll not only have a car that looks good but handles right and wont tear up tyres in 20,000kms.

Its a easy job I fitted kingsS/L in just over two hours on my AU ghia. You will need a 18mm socket to undo the top ball joint nut so as to remove the front strut. On the IRS you need to remove the rear brake caliper to remove the rear strut easy. You really dont need the spring compressor to replace the lower springs. But use it to undo the factory height springs. On the watts link work on the upper mounting cover then from the bottom undo the bottom mount & remove shocker from spring & if your able to complete that task you will work out the removal of the rear spring.
Remember u will need a floor jack & stand to do this job as well as hand tools or if U have air tools to make to job faster. As others have said have a front end alginment with shims or adjuster fitted.

With exhuast leave it to a fitter they have the bender , mig & oxy to do a good job. Fitting exhausts is a .

Kings s/l cost me $260 for F/R & pedders sports rider stuts for lowered springs to suit the IRS cost $350 much cheaper for the watts link shocks to suit. In the future I'am fitting Koni's to the front.

IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE TOOLS GET SOMEONE TO DO IT FOR YOU.

I had my AU forte lowered like a month ago to below XR heights, rides n feels awesome. Front and rear springs plus rear shocks, wheel alignment and wheel balancing. All cost me 550$, I was told by the place i went to that the falcons and commodores only need the rear shockers replaced, thus me getting only them. My camber was perfect, everything tested by them.

You lowered it to lows or superlows?
Basically, if you went to lower than an XR (which ride at about Lows as std) then your camber adjustment must be at the VERY limits. I'd get a second opinion as even XR's going to superlows need a camber kit in most cases.

What shocks are recommended ?

Mine's dropped 32mm and the ride is definately not as smooth over bumps - but then I must have some real ty roads nearby.

What are a new set of shocks and camber kit worth ?

I now my tyres a fine since the lowering. They've held up great (except for the rear ones : ).

yea they said my cambers were near the limit, im only about half a cm away from xr heights as i remember. Im pretty sure that they are the lows

Kings I heard make a ultra low. How low that is not sure. But S/L are bad enough for going over bumps for the underneath of the AU's.

The guy at tyerpower in Scoresby is good at algining lowered E & AU's with shims. He is also able to do the Valiant fronts correctly which are difficult to align when lowered.

You will need to find a good frontend guy to align your car when you have it lowered.I had the alignment in 2002 and no sign of abnormal tyre wear. Plus sent a guy from work there as his EL was done by Pedders & Bob Jane's & they could not get it right without recommending a expensive adjust kit. He is happy with the work done.

I went to tyresplus they give great service there, corner ferntree gully/springvale road. Just diagnolly across from brandon park shopping center

When i'm in Melbourne for work(Not very often anymore) I always stay at the mulgrave motor inn. Thats almost next door. Small world.

Go the superlows,, if your going to lower it not point going half way. I would have gone SSuperLows but with the combo of 19"s and the roads I drive on I would have no wheel arch...

It you are a city driver primarily you should be able to handle super lows... Though Im not expert on the state of Melbourne roads, I just know that Canberra has pretty good roads..

thanks for the advice guys... i appreciate it..
i am getting XR50 front bar.. or the TS50.. which ever i end up bloody deciding on.....! any way... just worried about drive ways.... mum/girlfriend driving my car...INTO GUTTERS... etc

so yeah maybe i mught just get standard XR fronts... then dump the ***.

if i went that way.. what would i need to get?
and i am looking at around the $800 mark?

Is that where the servo and storage place is? If I keep the ED, I will have to take it down there for a shim kit and alignment. Cheers!

BTW, is it not recommend to lower your AU by yourself, unlike E-Series?

Yep on Ferntree Gully rd.
Unless you cut the springs real low or have had a front hit. Paying for a ratchet kit is a wast of money .
It depends on the guy if he's good at frontends and reading the computer aligners.
I lowered mine 3 years ago & have had no probs with shims in the front & neither has the guy with the lowered EL at work.
