Default WHAT THE !!!.... Fog Lights Vs Hi-Beam

Got pulled over by a young cop one night (was a fair while ago) when i asked why, he said because i was driving with my foggies on, now this was a double demerit point weekend and was up for six (6) points, i pleaded ignorance and thankfully got let off with a warning, i started thinking how many would i have got for hi-beam's on..8, 10 maybe more????

I was amazed to discover that hi-beam only carries a one (1) point penalty and foggies three (3), what the !!!! its ok to blind some poor guy and cause an accident then to look at the bitumen only ten feet in front of you.

This is the law in W.A and was wondering if you guys in other states have the same laws, would be amazed if same applies.

(sorry if this has been done to death before, but am new to site)

My BA has the bottom lights but they are more driving lights than foggies.

They come on with the parkers and are the same as a torch light so they dont do **** but are hard wired into the light circut

If they are driving lights then they should only come on when high beam is on. Fog lights on the other hand should be able to come with parkers on.

I think thats how it works.

Yeah, I won't put them on when driving around town for that reason. I've heard of many people losing demerits over fog lights.

If we can't use them, why are WA car dealers not required to remove them or something?

Focus have seperate switch for foglights which can be activated independent of highbeam, matter of fact so do all Fords that have foglights as factory options/standard features.

In NSW its a $75 fine but no loss of points if you're done having yer foggies on.

I see pros and cons for them, but (and Im not just being brand biased here) I have no idea how the ones fitted to VY/Z commies passed ADR's. They are so bloody bright its not funny.

Course, AU XR lights are brighter so giving them a flash to turn em off usually works.......:

According to the RTA website and its list of all monetary and demerit fines, there is absolutley no penalty for having your front foglights on. It is not illegal!

However it is illegal to drive with your rear foggies on all the time, which constitutes a monetary & demerit fine.

You know what, I have Fog light (original) on my XE V8 S PAK and i use them in low or no light situation, rain or fog. I have upgrade the the globe in both headlight and fog light, they are bright as! Now i'm aware what the law is in WA and know my right on when to use them. If the cops got a problem them they can shove it up the a$$ cause i've done nothing wrong. :Reverend:

If it illegal them why are they still sold on cars today??? :monkes:

They do so because it is not illegal to use them in the conditions for which they are designed and intended for.

That's why there is a seperate switch on them, even in your XE so you can choose when to operate them. If you leave them on all of the time, and the rules say you can't have them on in clear conditions, i'd like to see you tell the cop to shove it up his a$$. No really, take some video of that.

To claify, i do drive with mine on whenever my lights are on. My choice, but if i get pulled over i'll be pleading ignorance, or copping it on the chin before i tell the cop to shove it up his a$$!!!!!!!!!!!

foglights can be quite ****ing annoying when faced oncoming especially in dark areas, thats why in the situations they are used in, they should be used in conjunction with parkers, not low beams. Is there any point in using them all the damn time? Normal low beams are ample most of the time, and if you are using them by the same rules as high beams.. there will be nobody to complain so you will be fine...

just get some good wattage standard headlights if you want more light!

whilst on the topic, what really ****s me are people who have a blown headlight who think they therefore have the right to drive with high beams on..

im not one to normally comment in these types of discussions.

But sometimes when i am driving an XR or FPV at work and i discover that the last person to drive the car has had the foggies on (needlessly) and that i have been driving around with them on unknowingly i get that awful feeling like when you discover that youve been walking around a public place with your fly un-done....

Another stupid rule in WA.
If one was to challenge it in court you would get away with it as fog lights are yellow lenses as the light penetrates better in fog than a white light.

You could say the fog lights are driving lights which they are IMO and they don't blind oncoming traffic as they are a spread beam not a pencil beam.

The most sensible thing been said so far!!

If you need them on around town all the time where theres ample street lights go and hand your licence in because you shouldnt be driving if you cant see and need to blind other drivers as a result!! Deserve every demirit point the cops give you on this one

on some car's, I don't mind spotlights(or flog lights)... but others have the really bright ones, that the light distracts me... or I cannot see 10 feet infront...

and.... the bloody company's who make car brake lights really bright, that it hurts your eyes ! whats with that.

In Victoria:

Your allowed to have your Front Fog Lights on, whenever you may wish.
The Rear Fog Lights, may only be turned on, in the suited conditions.

Needless to say, I don't turn my fog lights on, until the conditions are poor.

That does not mention fog-lights. It says likely to dazzle. ADR compliant fog-lights DO NOT shine in the eyes of an oncoming driver or a driver you are following. They illuminate the ground infront of you. I know, both my friend (Renault Clio 1.6) and myself (Ford Fiesta WP Zetec) drive with fog-lights on at night all the time, and have tested the theory ourselves.

Now, there is this rule on the RTA site...

Rule 217 (1)
Use rear fog light when not permitted
$77 and 1 demerit point

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/rulesregul...ts_general.pdf

Look under 'LIGHTS.'
