Default Monash Uni study finds cyclists less than human

Quote:
Face off - Cyclists not human enough for drivers: study

Lead author Dr Alexa Delbosc, Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Transport Studies (Department of Civil Engineering) at Monash University, said the insect-human scale was designed for the study because of the many informal slurs against cyclists comparing them to “cockroaches” or “mosquitoes”.

On both ape-human and insect-human scales, 55 per cent of non-cyclists and 30 per cent of cyclists rated cyclists as not completely human.

Chairman's Award: Chairman's Award - Issue reason: Your outstanding contributions to this community have not gone unnoticed. IN my view you are a worthy recipient of the (rarely used) Chairman's Award.

Was the hypothesis tested with pyrethrum? :P

More seriously, it's a good quantification of how we (a social group) can dehumanise another group so readily. A "barometer" of whether its actually not unreasonable to have concern that a group of (say) cyclists is at similar risk of aggression to a collected group of people following a particular theology...

When I lived in Melb I knew a few people who went to Monash.

They seemed to excel in Illegal Chems and organised protests more than the regular curriculum
