Default Was it a bargain?

Picked up a '92 EB2 GLi sedan today, 163k on the clock*, 6 months rego, 1 owner from new, and in really good shape. There's a couple of stonechips on the front, and a patch of rust on the underside of the boot lid, body is otherwise unmarked and all the paint's in good nick.

Motor sounds great, doesn't smoke or drop oil, 4spd tbar transmission seems healthy (I know nothing about auto boxes though), interior is pretty much new having had seat covers from day one. Twenty two hundred was the price.

*The odo has stopped. Last pink slip showed 155k in June '04, so I believed the old guy when he said it's only recently stopped. Speedo still works though - what could be wrong with the odo? Is it electronically driven or cable operated?

One other thing, the lights on the gearshift indicator have failed (assuming there were some?) - I guess it's strightforward enough to replace the bulbs?

Cheers,
Alex

theres just a globe under the gearshift surround u can just pry the surround up and rotate the plastic plug, i think its just a blade globe i`m not 100% sure but its easy to get to and change...

Heya Alex,

On LPG I assume too??? If so, it was a decent buy! Whereabouts are you in Oz?

Odo stopped working on my ea recently, they really are pieces of crap. You can get a 2nd hand one from a wrecker, but the k's will be different. I have the old odometer sitting here next to the pc to remind me that when I actually get off the net and get a life I will take it apart to see how it works.

And then I will see if I can wind the clock back, cos this old one says 211,000km and the one from the wrecker (which is now in the ea) says 410,000km. Not happy!

Be aware too that around the 200,000km mark (approx) the head gasket can go. Just keep a good eye on it, and if anything remotely suspicious happens then change it quick smart. Unlike me (boohoo!), who ended up having to get another engine...

Remember too that on these forums is an LPG chat

4lex- go buy.

Assuming the pink slip is not fake!

Very good klms, if ya look after it, the EB should last forever.

Cheers all. Will look at the shift bulb this eve. As for the odo, is the general concensus the problem will likely lie in the instrument rather than sender/cable? I fiddled about with the trip counter reset button in case that'd help and noticed the button can be completely removed, I wonder if that's related.

Doesn't have gas on as yet, I'd read some horror stories about early gas conversions burning the valvegear, so I thought I could always fit my own at a later date, plus I didn't see a single sedan on gas that had a donut tank in the spare wheel well instead of the regular lose-half-your-boot tank, which was too much of a compromise on getting a wagon.

No plans to modify it, though the rear speakers are blown and need replacing (what size can I fit in without having to get the hacksaw out?) and I'll swap the stock radio for a Kenwood unit I have. Tyres are at about 3mm all round so will need doing for the rego at the latest, currently wearing P6000 in 215/65/r14, so I'll keep an eye on ebay for a set of wheels and tyres, I'm thinking a 215/60/r15 would be a suitable replacement, only .6% bigger in circumference by my reckoning. Anyone know the PCD and offset of the EB2 rims offhand?

Cheers,
Alex

@Brent-EA Ghia - Thanks for the tip on the speakers. Think 6.5" could be wedged in there?

@MaDDeSTMaN - Is that a mk1 Escort Mex in your avatar? I had one about ten years back and would love another, there's so few left in rainy, salty England though.

6.5" may fit, but you might need to add a tiny spacer. You don't want to hack up the parcel shelf.

Nope, Mk II RS2000. a Mk I Escort Mexico would have been a sweet ride (got any pics?), can't go wrong with either a Mk I or Mk II Escort I think, great examples of Ford Europe getting it exactly right, I think anyway

Was a great car, used to mostly steer with the throttle... No pics with me I'm afraid. A mate used to have an awesome 3.0 SC v6 essex powered mk2 in the same colour as yours - never managed to get the rear suspension set up well enough to handle the torque out of it though and ended up having to reduce the boost pressure. No idea how much power it made, but it was a lot
