Default EB Error Code - Running Lean?

I took my car to ford yesterday and had a diagnostic test done to check if the ECU was bring up any errors. It brought up one error - running lean. Now my car definately doesn't run lean (usually get around 400kms to a tank and likes to blow black stuff out of the exhaust when i start it). Would i be right to say the cam (wade 1004 112) is making the computer play up and running lean means it would inject more fuel to compensate? therefore actually running rich?

Is there anything i should check or replace that could be causing this other than the cam?

There may be a problem with the heated oxygen sensor and is providing falsely lean signals to Mr EEC. As they age the responsiveness tends to suffer and sometimes the outright reading can be BS.

EEC will attempt to compensate when you are cruising - but only so much. At full throttle EEC 'knows what's best' and will ignore what HEGO is telling it.

I have no suggestions as to how you can check the veracity of HEGO readings. You can hook a multimeter up to the HEGO and HEGO grnd pins to see the voltage being produced - but then, this needs to be compared to another reading (i.e. wideband oxy sensor on a dyno).

Maybe just replace HEGO?
