2010 Titanium TDCi 5dr Hatchback
I short time ago I clipped a kerb while turning left, slow speed, only rubbed the edge of the tyre, never touched the wheel. There is a noise coming for the rear nearside and I today I took the tyre off for a look around. Uneven wear on the inside edge only. Looked at the Rear end and everything appears to be tight and nothing bent. I've always been told that there is nothing to adjust at the rear in terms of alignment so I'm thinking that something must be bent or moved. All help and advice required.

Rear toe is adjustable. cambolts near the ends of the rear lower arms.
Wear on inner edge is easily goes unnoticed. How long between the brush with the kerb and noticing the wear? Last edited by rondeo; 16-06-2016 at 08:39 AM. Reason: addition |

My experience has been that most tyre places don't do a very good job of wheel alignment. I had the MB done by an alignment specialist after I hit a pothole and bent a wheel at about 15k, and tyre wear has been even ever since.

lol What timing...
Just tonight I put an OS order in for complete lower/upper control arms, Lateral Link bushes, tie rods for both sides on the rear. I've had enough, it feels saggy, it squats when it shouldn't, in general it's tired. Trying to source standard springs, or get my local Springs Guys to hook me up otherwise I'll have to bandaid it and use airbags, then draw my attention on to shocks which seems easy enough to find. All the usual suspects have springs but they are lowered up to 40mm, no thanks. Then on to the front end, it's wearing on the inner tyre but I believe the rear is doing it more. One day I'll have it squared away... |

Mine was doing the same on the front. Tried a couple of chain places (Bridgestone and Goodyear) and they said it was all fine. Went to a specialist wheel aligner (Rick's in Brisbane) and they found around 9mm of toe out. Realigned it and it now wears perfectly even.

I had the same: wear on inner front tyres. Seems to be a common thing with this car.
For DIY: I just gave the adjusters a quarter turn each to increase toe-in and the new tyres are wearing evenly. Each side should be done the same, because the steering angle sensor would be wrong otherwise. Toe-in can be within specification yet under actual driving conditions could be different? |

If you check the specs, there is quite a wide variation allowed in toe. When I last had the wheels aligned, they said to keep an eye on the tyre wear, but it's been perfect ever since.
The NZ dealers do an alignment as part of the PDI, I assume it's the same in Oz. Get that wrong and you could have uneven wear from Day 1.

In my experience with Holden, Ford, Nissan, and Mazda dealers in Australia (certainly South East Queensland anyway) a wheel alignment is not done as part of the pre-delivery. Obviously a money saver for the dealer.

I'll have a look at the Rear Toe and see if I can any difference between sides. I'm in Perth and again, using named dealers and suspension people, never had much luck with wheel alignment, always gone back for a second adjustment at the front end. All of them had said that there is no adjust at the rear.

If you've not tried them before, try Malaga Suspensions. I've never had a bad alignment out of them. 60,000k's out of a set of tyres on an E53 X5 Sport is quite a feat and they still had a lot of life left in them when I sold the car recently.

That's correct, Cyclone. I asked my dealer about it, and was told they were spot on. Wore out a set of tyres in no time!!

With the 18's the only time I had wear problem is that the missus let the pressure get too low and they wore unevenly. I was told it is a common problem for cars with 18s especially european cars. Don't know if that is crap or not but I check the pressure as soon as I get home from work (I work away) and so far, so good and there is plenty of gutter rash on the wheels.

I was getting excessive wear on the rear inner edges of my Titanium wagon, more than the OP. I recently had this sorted out & was told the right rear camber was 1.5 degrees out!
Factory adjustments were not sufficient fix (factory setup was pretty crap were the words) so modifications were made but now it's sorted & all 4 wheels adjusted, the wagon handles better than ever |
