Default epa noise check?

i went through a roundabout in Mordialloc today and saw something odd; there was a bloke standing on the roundabout, hard hat and fluro vest, facing the oncoming traffic. he held faced towards the oncoming traffic what looked like a microphone with one of those fluffy covers on it on a long single pole, about 6ft tall. under the 'mike' looked like a smallish box. in his other hand he held what appeared to be a meter of somesort with a small aerial on it, about the size of a motorola handheld, or slightly larger.

This wouldn't be an epa noise check surely?

I can tell you the epa were setup in geelong about 3 weeks ago on a sat night from 8pm to sometime after midnight. cops were pulling people over then taking them back to where the epa were doing tests. I was one of them. it must be fund raising time cos the fines are pretty huge. pre 1983 can be 96db anything newer 90db i was tested at 107db. $584 fine even after i wrote in explianing first time etc etc and 3 weeks to fix it have it re-tested and hand paperwork in or be fined again. Test is $38 be careful boys they are on the hunt ! my car is an XB sedan 351 it used to have extractors with 2 straight through mufflers 2 1/4 pipes. now has a balance pipe added, 2 resi's and 2 huge mufflers to replace the straigh through mufflers unfortunately im now down to 92db, after 2 failed attempts just made the deadline. the angry growl has now gone.

Could be EPA. I don't see why not.

Be an interesting exercise, I really wonder what the general directive here is in relation to same, but alas I disgress from topic.

OP - General noise test, not epa I would think, however no expert except to say EPASUX

130db is where sound starts to cause pain

150db sounds highly unlikely

I was watching Highway Patrol and a police officer pulled over a Harley to check why he was so loud. The driver had been bitten by a spider and was trying to find the hospital, so he was advised make his exhaust quieter and was free to go to the hospital.
