i have done the trip up and down the coast a few times from adelaide through melbourne, sydney, brissy, townsville to cairns. It was great and lots of fun, most of the highway along the coast is reasonably well built and good to drive on. as for prperatiosn i didnt take any tools or the similar with me, as i had a very reliable car and there were always stops and service stations not too far apart.

Get a recent "Road Atlas", usually around 20 bucks or less and has all the major roads for the whole country as well as more detailed maps for capital cities and largish towns.

Make sure you have road side servive.

Perhaps service your car just before you leave if its close to the interval, or predict a service point and find a service centre if your car falls for a service along the way.

go to www.tripadvisor.com and search for the locations and scroll the forums there for hints and tips, or better still post a question or 2 and see what the locals say.

Oh and Merry Christmas

If you decide on the rock PM me. There is lots to know before you take off into the Territory. But it is one of the most rewarding drives there is.

Cheers.
