Almost all of those cars if not all of them for $5k is most likely a grenade waiting to explode. Run away..

As fast as you can.

Proton M21 would be a better bet than a gti, still has the same motor with recaros and momo without all the body kit.

For that kind of money, you'll have to think a bit out of the box, like the previous post said, most popular Japanese rockets will be hand grenades.

Could find a decent mkii golf gti for that kind of money.
Some other alternatives:
Seat Ibiza gti
Peugeot 306 s16
Any earlier xr6, could maybe stretch to an AU xr6 up?
TE/F Magna sports

Any idea what kind of direction you wanted go? Little hatch? Big Sedan?

5k actually buys a pretty decent car if you shop around, my fairlane was less than that,,and I love it. Not manual of course though.

not sure really, i love the bigger falcons and commodores but i can have just as much fun in a smaller car, hot hatch's etc. so its not so much about the power it makes, more the amount of fun i can have in it when i give it some.

I hadnt considered some of the smaller cars you guys have suggested so i'll start looking into them, also i had a similar thought towards some of the small japanese stuff (they are cheap for a reason) haha

Theres Gen III V8 commodores in that price bracket these days.....

300hp and a hell of an aftermarket to make them even faster for minimal outlay.

Has to be worth a look over the local 5 litre VT series 1 even if they dont sound so mean right out of the box.

Could possibly find a 2nd gen crx for that kind of coin too....fun little things to drive they are. They were never as popular as some other japanese cars (well around here anyway), might find one in decent nick.

The thing is though a secondhand Hyundai Excel is probably quicker than an XE Clevo.... And the gearstick probably doesn't come out in your hand....
What does a VL Turbo go for these days...? They even had brakes!

Either an early Renault Clio RenaultSport 172 or 182 Cup. 182 Cup will be more upward of 10-15k still for a good one, but you can find early examples of 172's for around $5k. Tret it well and you will reap the rewards. These things are capable of straight line acceleration of around 6.8-7s for the 0-100 sprint, and down lower with Intakes, stainless pipes, and RS Tuner software. They also handle like some sports cars worth 20 times their current value.
Xenon headlights, later 172's had ESP, leather/alcantara seats and climate control and you have yourself excellent value for money as well. They're a comfy little thing cruising as well, no jokes. I had my 182cup for 4 years. It was fantastic, and I never had any issues with it.

A modern Classic.

Not the latest or fastest but I reckon this would be a pretty good thing if you could get it for under $5k. With such a low mileage you could probably give it a hard time and nothing would break too soon. Only caveat is that I'd change all the fluids and fit a trans cooler asap, and budget for the head gasket to go at some point in the future, hopefully not for a few years....

AU XR8 Manual in any series would be my pick
auto are really just for cruising and not for spirited driving
you could get some of the other car mentioned but most cars for this money are 10-15 years old and will need money spent on them, get a ford and everything is cheap and parts are everywhere.
I'd love an ED XR8 manual but by the time you do some work to it, it will cost more and still be slower than a stock AU XR8
I bought my AU3 XR8 in blueprint with leather and so-on for $6k 1 year ago.
if its a toy car and you want to enjoy it don't worry about getting a mint low km car get the cheapest one and spend some coin fixing to how you like.
or buy my VH Wagon, its got a loud V8 goes as quick as any new standard car and its historic, and being manual and light its fun.
