As it happens I am a customs broker and work for a small freight forwarding company so can offer some advice on this topic.
Postage and Air Courier are the way to go for all small parcels as the shipping cost is relatively small compared to the overall savings you will make when buying from your local FRAUD dealer. You must understand that post/courier services include customs clearance and delivery/pick up at both here and in the USA. This is why Rockauto are so efficent. However when you get into larger parcels then air cargo or even cheaper still sea cargo is the way to go. What you do is ask your supplier to deliver to your nominated freight forwarder in the USA and they can ship to you as cargo. This means that your purchase price will be cheaper because for the supplier it will only be a local delivery. The only problem is that you will have to pay customs clearance/airline handling & delivery charges once it arrives in Aust. At the moment for aircargo we would charge A$0.55/kg + A$110.00 handling + A$125.00 C/clearance delivery would depend on location etc. Overall it is just a bit of a balancing act but if you really want to import bulky items it can be done but one way or the other it is till going to cost.
