Default Hot rod chassis

Where would one find the chassis dimensions for a 1928 - 32 Ford? I'm starting a hot rod project, and am looking at making mostly everything myself, chassis included. I'm just after the dimensions so I can start work.

It will be a little "different" to any out there, my plans are to heavily modify the chassis for my plan to work...
I'll keep you updated, obviously in a different section.

So where's the best place to look?

Cheers

I am, will this be a problem?
If it is, chassis mods may not be done, will it still be a problem?

Sorry for the questions, its my first build of anything major apart from a Group NC Torana.

My mates 32 sits on a Hi Lux chassis , not sure if that's a route you wish to take or not.

'32 rails are curved and sculpted...not exactly a make-it-at-home proposition like a Model T chassis is (that's basically some straight rectangular section that anyone could knockup).

Plenty of kits available though, and I have seen ones that are side rails and cross rails which you'd have to weld together...but you'd want to make sure you did it right. I'd be buying a chassis and going from there...

Check out ozrodders.com
They are an australian hotrod forum. very friendly guys. They will be able to answer all your hot rodding questions. Especially chassie wise
also check out http://www.asrf.org.au/
That site will also guide you as to what mods will be acceptable for street registration. If it doesnt match their requirements, dont expect to registor it, period. Assuming that is the direction you want to take. Otherwise if it is to be a drag car or show car ownly, check out cams, otherwise, mod away
I want to make my own rod one day but given my current financial situation it is a little to expensive at the moment. So I am starting with a more reasonable base (ie cheaper to start of with).

Depending what your trying to acheive at the end, the original rail dimensions mite be of no use whatso ever
Most who qualify for full rod rego start with an original chassis and mod that as it qualifies as a pre 1949
So a few questions, full rego or rod rego ,can you not use a later model chassis as a donor and go down the rebody path
Are you goin for an authentic style or look , or will later model style suspension not bother you
ozrodders is a good site, theres plenty of yank sites, theres plenty of info out there on 28-32 fords

As Uteaddict says, ASRF is the answer. Join it, you will have the resources and contacts to do it the right way if you want to get it registered.

SR "street rod" registration under the permit scheme is pretty flexible, almost sane, but you must work with the authorities using the scheme. Working against will end in tears.

32 rail would be hard to replicate. It would be better to buy a pair of reproduction rails and add your own cross-members and suspension points to these. It would also help with registration down the track.

rails arent that hard to replicate with the right equipment you can always pay someone with a ring roller to rool the rails for you

Like Elks said, if you intend on doing a hot rod, it is just as easy to buy reproduction rails. And then add your own cross members, suspention components and the like. Plenty around the joint, especially for a budget of about 5-6 grand or under if i remember correctly.

http://www.deucecustoms.com.au/index.html
http://www.cruzin.com.au/ (australian hot rod mag, there is also australian street rodding but cant find the site)

Becarefull when viewing american hot rod sites. There are somethings that american hot rod builders can get away with that you can't in Australia. This comes down to different legislation basicly. Anyways, enjoy

Contact the Asrf and get a copy of the rules for your state , there are two real choices , buy the body and drop it on something like a lux which means certain engine capacity restraints when registering as a lux or join your local club who will find an engineer to assist and guide you through building a real rod , doing either build has limitations but the last rod I built was a 1948 Austin A40 clevo powered delivery van which was registered here in Qld as an individual construct , the new owner wrote it off :( which was a waste of 3 long hard years of work and a great deal of money , good luck in your decissions and have fun

Im pretty sure only SA can make youre own chassis rail's most other
state's you need original rail's plus at least 2 original crossmember's
used to get reg , deffinately join OZRODDER's there's some talented
guy's on there .
ASRF is the only way to go to get rego .

Unfortunately putting a rod on a lux chassis is not that easy, they are
changing the rule's , where the donor body must comply with the chassis
original crash test and ADR spec's .Join a club first , someone there will
have built simular and can help you thru it.
