Exclamation Brisbane fuel prices outstrip other cities, says RACQ

Brisbane fuel prices outstrip other cities, says RACQ

From: AAP February 16, 2011 9:16AM

BRISBANE motorists pay more for petrol than drivers in Australia's other major cities, a new report shows.

The Royal Automobile Club of Queensland's (RACQ) Annual Fuel Price Report for 2010 shows Brisbane petrol prices were higher last year than in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide.

The average price of unleaded fuel in Brisbane was 127 cents per litre (cpl), an average of two cents per litre higher than in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, and four cents per litre higher than Adelaide.

Brisbane motorists also paid 9.1 cents a litre more on average than they did in 2009, when the state government ended a fuel subsidy of about eight cents per litre.

RACQ spokesman Paul Turner said Brisbane fuel prices were also higher than in some of the state's regional cities.

Toowoomba drivers paid 123.6 cents a litre, Bundaberg 126.2, and Townsville 126.7.

"This is very disappointing as fuel prices in Brisbane should be cheaper, given the city's large market, higher volumes of fuel consumption, and that fuel is refined locally," Mr Turner said.

He said the high price of unleaded petrol in Brisbane was largely due to the dominance of the major supermarket chains and the absence of a major discounter, as in other capitals.

Premium unleaded petrol stayed at about 9 cents a litre above regular unleaded fuel, Mr Turner said.

"It's disappointing to see the cost of premium ULP so high, given that it costs the refiners only 3.5 cents a litre more to produce than regular ULP," he said.

On the plus side, motorists would be paying 14 cents a litre more for fuel if it wasn't for the strong Australian dollar, the RACQ report said

Thank you Anna for scrapping the states 8cl fuel subsidy...

They are just trying to shame the govt into reinstating the subsidy

Just got back from the Gold Coast. Petrol was about 10 cents more in the Gold coast then some random small servos in the middle of the bush on the Pacific highway.

I would of thought the servos far away from everything would of been more expensive.... but that's not the case.

You can thank woolworths and coles for this...

They run everything in the country, milk prices, fuel prices, alcohol prices but the ACCC let them get away with it.

Soon they wont employ anyone either through their automated store registers and stock inventory.

Its time we all stood together and bought as little as possible off them, buy all your meat and vegies from the local butchers / green grocers and fuel from independents!!

We have been saying it for years, country QLD has cheaper fuel then brisbane, yet it costs more to transport it.... I don't have a problem with country areas having cheap fuel prices, but I don't see why us city folk should pay more when the refinery is just up the road!

For the very same reason that you get paid what you do for having a job. Just like the company or customer pays you for what they think your worth, the oil companies can charge you what they think you will pay for the petrol.

You have a choice, capitalism or communism.

Do we really???

strange its been $1.36 here since november last year.

Never ceases to amaze me how many articles are constantly written about Brisbane fuel prices being dear... maybe it needs to be retittled "to Brisbane outstrips other capitol cities....."?

Id be happy to pay $1.26

Where the hell did the RACQ get the Townsville price of $1.26???
We had fuel at that price last year for 2 months then it suddenly shot up 10cents a litre and has stayed there since.

So before you people in Brisbane all whinge, mite actually pay to ask what other people pay for fuel.

Make the same fuel last longer, get a new small car. Or change your driving style and put the tyres up to 40psi and see how low you can get it, there is always room for improvement. Treat it like a game

Maybe we need a new tax to subside Qld's plight for cheaper fuel.

In my area, e10 has been 1.40 in all servos for over a month, not changing at all, regardless of day or time. 98 is $1.57, cost me $90 to fill up yesterday.

The only problem there is that Woolies and Coles on sells the fuel to a lot of the independants.. they buy up more fuel then they sell and then sell it to others at inflated prices because they own the market.

The problem with that is Woolworths and Coles own everything in all different areas of retail. If you shop at Big W, Officeworks, Dicksmith, Bunnings, Dan Murphy's etc you are buying from them. It is difficult to not spend money somewhere and it ending up in their pockets.
As for petrol we can still choose not to buy at there outlets but Coles alone own coal mines in several states. They are literally taking over the country through acquisition, dominance, and forcing out rivalry.

It is a very worrying concept. Some people most likely don't realize how much these supermarkets are taking the suppliers/farmers and us as consumers for a ride. What we need is more Supermarket chains to dig there way into the market. In Australia Coles and Woolworths make up roughly 75% the market. Then look over in the USA the 2 biggest supermarket chains only share about 20%. That is problem. No competition.

They great thing about Toowoomba, so many independent retailers not just in fuel, but clothing, groceries, you name it. But that's changing.

It used to annoy me that so many people would blame Woolworths and Coles for being powerful, I mean they didn't become that way without our help and they're a business, they are out to make money. But some of their methods are nothing short of shocking. Good video below. The hungry beast alright.

Sorry, this is the correct link to the story on Woolworths and Coles (other is for mobile devices and may not work). Worth a look, and have a look at some of their other videos. A great TV show that raises some great questions.

Calm down, im not making my observations based on what I read in the media, I'd be a fool if I did, but I actually do travel a bit for work and I do actualyl know what I pay for fuel in bris and out in the bush.

The cost of fuel doesnt bother me because at the end of the day we all need, but what does bother me is the fact that these fuel companies can get away with price fixing (or price dominating the market) to push other brands out of the market, yet neither the federal government or the ACCC do anything about it.

You wont have a living the way they are going soon, the HR resources needed to run a supermarket are dwindling away by the day, firstly its self serve cash registers, next will be self filling shelving, that will all be coordinated from head office.

What do you think the biggest cost to the likes of Woolworths / Coles is?? Staff!!

Rumour has it that Fuel stations will be self serve too sooner then later, it will be simply be a pay before you fill system. BP tried it back in the late 90's but it didnt work then because cash was still widely used, now that cars are what people use at the pumps it will be the way they go.

No offence taken mate!! I just wish we could see a little more competition in the market place, the harder they push the quicker they will dominate the fuel market.

I am not sure what 91 normally is here, but I have been paying between $1.48-$1.52 for 98 for quite some time now.
And this servo is normally 2c cheaper then the one 20 mins up the highway.

What do you think the cheapest day is too? Back in the day I used to hear about Cheap Tuesday etc... But I now find Tuesday to be the most expensive.
I have found Saturday morning to be the best.
