The most heartbreaking day of my life.

I always wanted to visit the wtc and see 2 sunsets in one day.

There's so many tv specials on to mark 15 years ago. When i first saw footage of this I thought it was some Hollywood special effects.....until I saw the 2nd plane fly into the 2nd tower. I cant unsee people choosing to jump than burn or collapse with the tower. So heart wrenching.

RIP to all who perished on 9/11. We will never forget.

i have had dinner with the son of the pilot from the first plane to hit and know 5 people who first hand saw the second plane hit. one of the blokes wife was inside tower 2 and was lucky to get out. she left straight after the first plane hit even though was told to stay.

I remember waking up in the morning getting ready to go to primary school, would usually watch Pokemon/Dragon Ball Z on Cheez TV on channel 10.

Except that morning with wall to wall footage of the 9/11 terror attacks.

Its hard to believe that was 15 years ago, it feels like yesterday.

I remember waking up around midnight. And the footage was on repeat, over and over and over on every channel. Was dumbfounded.

I was working night shifts, got home and turned the to on as I always did and it was just after the first place had hit, saw the second one come in live.

Like many others, I initially thought it was a movie. Stayed up all night watching the coverage. Seriously thought we were seeing the start of ww3.

Yup, me too. Tuned on the TV just after the first tower was hit and listened as they postulated that it was some kind of accident, then watched the second impact live thinking "oh schitt, this is war", then the reports started coming in about the plane going down in Pennsylvania, then the one that went into the Pentagon.............. I was starting to think about where was the safest place to go if it started happening here. You can't defend against random attacks like that unless you're on permanent alert and everything is locked down.

I was in N.Y few months ago , stayed across in N.J with a view direct to the WTC from our hotel . Even then could still visualize those planes crashing.
I wanted to go up the new tower but couldn't bring myself to do it. I went to the site and is still hard to imagine what it would of been like there that day.
As said , hard to believe it is 15 years :(

Was on nightshift as well .... but we had TVs on the NOC wall .... and all broadcasts changed immediately to the same thing. The entire NOC went silent with disbelief that nightshift.

Same here, got home from shift work as usual not feeling tired turned on TV to watch it all unfold, something I will never forget.

Was only in Grade 3 when it happened

I woke up wondering why Cheez TV/Morning cartoons weren't on,...even at that age I couldn't believe what I was watching.

We read out stories from the news paper as our 'Show and Tell' in our class every day...that morning I didn't need to read off a newspaper to tell the class what had happened.

15 Years is hard to believe.

My other half and I went to the 9/11 memorial in March and left with the strangest feeling we've ever had. Seeing the faces of those who died on the wall really gets you. Going there really makes you appreciate the scale of what happened.

I was in year 9 when it happened, we did no work at school for 3 days, just watched the endless overage on TV and had the teachers try and mak sense of it all.

For me that day was the day I lost my innocence and really opened my eyes to the world.

I saw it last night on the History channel and ..... it feels like just yesterday again. It feels personal. Al these emotions come up.... If you have time and want to check it out, it was a superb special.

The wife and I went to NYC for our honeymoon in 2013. Obviously we took the time to go to ground zero to understand what had happened and pay our respects.

What unnerved me most about that visit was that, whilst there was significant work being done on regenerating the site, there were a few buildings just across the road that still had significant damage. I vividly remember they still had debris nets across the buildings to stop any falling debris from impacting on the ground.

To give you an idea of the scale f the regeneration works, the ground zero site had essentially been totally cleared, with the underground railway station based in the basement of the building site re-established and operational.

And yet these buildings across the road had hardly been touched.

And of course, there was the framework from one of the towers that had been found in the rubble that was in the shape of a cross.

It was a very sombre experience, to say the least.

The friend we were staying with (an Aussie teacher) had travelled through the subway station at WTC only 30 mins prior to the attacks on that day. They lived in lower Brooklyn, but one of the friends recalled how he could see the smoke plume form their place. He also recalled how the house got covered in ash.

Memories I will never forget, even though I was not there at the time.

RIP.

Sadly this wasn't the first attempt.
The first attempt was a failure. The tried to bring down one tower by destroying the foundation and crashing into the next.
It didn't work.
They (the terrorists) vowed to bring the towers down.

I warned all my school friends that this will happen. They laughed at me, calling me racist and whatnot.

Nobody, in their right mind, would imagine this crime.
But it was percieveable.

Some photos from back in 2013 when I visited the memorial. Have to say it is really well done, and 100% worth visiting.

Tin foil is what the steel beams would need to have been made out of to melt in the way they did due to Jet fuel and cause a 'free fall' of the buildings.

However, thermite burns at 4000F...

Jet fuel didn't melt the beams.
When you heat steel to 600c. It weakens the steel and becomes like spaghetti.

Very sad day indeed - for reasons far more important than many realise.
To pull the wool over the eyes of the world and murder for financial gain ranks up there with the third reich.

I remember the initial confusion in the first few days about whodunnit... Media speculation quite openly pointing the finger at China & Russia, & then when Al Qaeda claimed responsibility there was the news of the first recorded retaliation murder; of an Afghan shopkeeper in (texas?) because he looked like the terrorists.

Those few days after the attacks are what I imagine the Cuban missile criais must have been like, with the tense buildup towards a possible ww3.

Two pieces of footage always get to me from 9/11: the grandmother wailing as people pour out of the upper floor like ants, and the still photo of a lone man plunging to his death, headfirst, arms to his sides, one leg straight & the other bending the knee forward.

Terror dude - The War on 'Terror'

Form Boston to Paris and even a aircraft or two... Terror does not require a name or a face and therefor there is no 'end'.

Whilst I appreciate (but don't necessarily agree) that people maintain a different view as to who the 'real' perpetrators behind 9/11 were, can we agree to leave those theories out of this thread, otherwise it will go off the rails real quick?

At the end of the day, irrespective of who committed this heinous act, we should all remember and pay respect to those who lost their lives during the event. That is what this thread is about.

If you feel so inclined to 'discuss' who the perpetrators were, then maybe start your own thread on the topic?
