hi all, my xr8 has recently developed an issue with the steering that unfortunately is getting worse and search as I might I have not been able to find any similar issues. It seems that any time I make a left turn whilst accelerating my steering seems to lock up, originally it felt like I was just loosing power assistance where now as it has gone on and got worse it seems to jam up. The car doesn't appear to be using fluid and I can't see evidence of the steering column interfering with anything. Has anybody had anything similar to this, it is starting to concern me and I'm getting worried it might catch me out one day.

Centre the steering wheel.
Then disconnect the steering shaft at the rack, turn the steering wheel full lock & see if it jams. If not, it's most likely the rack. Pump "might" play a role there too if it's stuffed. I got a reco rack at about 280,000km. Tie rod seals/bushes were leaking. A reco' rack + one new hose was about $520 odd, labour was about $200 |

what headers are on it???
some aftermarket headers sit rather close to the steering intermediate shaft and if there is any saged or bad /broken engine mounts the headers can touch or rub on the shaft under acceleration... |

I'm not familiar with the design of the 8's, but logic tells me you may be on the money there T-man.
These racks wouldn't be designed to fail like that I'd hope! I'd be looking for friction marks somewhere on headers or steering in that case. |

Might be a worn right side wheel bearing jamming against the casing as you put lots of weight on it whilst accelerating and turning left. Just a thought.

Thanks for the feedback guys, so after some investigation it appears that the mount on the drivers side of the engine is actually compressing and pushing the extractors down onto the steering arm which has heat wrap around it which made the problem worse. on the plus side the high tensile bolts i put into the block to replace the broken factory ones a couple of years back are working a treat

Turns out the top bolt in the actual mount had broken loose and was just sort of floating about inside the mount, got a new one in now and it's all cleared up
