A wise man once said it is easy to learn from your mistakes - but better if you learn from some one else's mistakes.
So share your repressed experiences so others can beifit from your "mis-steps". in my case it was a loud exhaust. For years i flew below the radar then i decided to basically put a 3" straight pipes (one resonator at the rear) on my fg xr6 ute (running 460rwkw). It sounded great to me - but even driving normally people would be thinking i was a hoon. Neighbours started to complain i was driving too fast (I wastnt), police always looked twice and less desirable types also started to notice my car as it sounded modified). So now i am going to quiet it back down and once again become the grey man in a nondescript white ute. |

Yep, a cheap exhaust on my old XR8. I hoped it would sound good, but it didn't. And the more I tried to "fix" it, the worse it got. Should have stayed with stock.
Now in the G6ET, I like the quietness. Maybe I'm just getting old. |

Spending big money on engine modifications for more power only to discover it not much better than stock standard.

Had an LC gtr with a 253 with a mild cam and 30thou bore and braided hoses and battery in the boot and 4 point roll cage rolling on stockies (deep dish rears) and it was flawless, not 1 ripple, wobble, dint or scratch, my brothers ex gf decided to mod it for me by taking it out (without permission) and parking it into an xf.. By far the worst mod on any of my cars

Rang up to book my VY SS ute in for a full exhaust system and dyno tune, they said they could do it the next day, so I dropped it down and had everything done and had completely forgot that I had added octane booster to that tank of fuel.
Took me a few weeks to work out why it stopped running properly.......... |

Worst mod I did was modify the existence of my XE falcon. Man I miss that car. Trying to find a new one now is proving more difficult than I imagined.

worst mod was i put 350+cfm race heads and large solid cam on a standard from 1970 engine short motor and spin it to 7500rpm.. needless to say, busted rod, block, etc.
but damn it pushed me in the seat while it lasted.... my standard short motor racing no longer works on old school v8's like it did back in the 1990's, because all of the old school v8's are now too thrashed |

Gees i've done a quite a few stupid things when i was a youngster like:
Cut the exhaust of the cl chrysler 265 to try make it sound a bit better. Connecting the output of the air-conditioning compressor to the intake thinking it would give me psi this was on a xd. lol. Putting a 2litre izusu engine and gemini 5 spead in a suzuki sierra, had issues with cooling as i could only fit a thermo-fan in it but that sucked and modified bonnet latch that would fail every now again, modified sump would smack front diff if going over big bump, rear driveshaft was only 170mm long. Though i used to do near on around 700km's to and from work a week in it. |

Add my name to list of exhaust regrets...
I had extractors and a custom twin 2 inch system put on my XB and I lost a heap of torque and the sound above idle is an embarrassing loose, loud noise.

I cut a hole in a sealed subwoofer enclosure I had in my first car, thinking "ports add more bass"...suffice to say it sounded terrible afterwards.
Oh and on the same car (1996 Ford Mondeo), the original owner had fitted hideous 15" 3-spoke rims and some sort of CAT-back exhaust...but anyway, when I had new rotors or pads or something fitted the brakes were rubbing on the spokes so the guys fitted wheel spacers...it got to the point that if I felt the steering wheel vibrate I needed to pull over and tighten the wheel nuts... |

Sometimes I regret fitting an LPG system to my BA, not because I am against LPG (obviously I'm not) but because I was talked into fitting a below-average system by a mob who werent really good at it. The car has never been the same since.

I've had a few, thankfully nothing expensive:
-checker plate rear parcel shelf, acted like an oven in summer. -turbo whistle, clips on exhaust, just makes it sound like a VW bettle -neons in the car, flashed to the sub mounted in the checker plate parcel shelf |

My blue checkerplate floormats... I don't miss one bit!
For me, I loved the loud exhaust on my EA. With the manual, extractors, cam etc. it sounds alright for a 6... but now everytime I drive it, I just wait to be pulled over or receive a nice letter from the EPA. I'm also now in the "must quieten it down" boat.

I decided to add a 'kill switch' to my 180B....
Not knowing anything about car electrics I just stripped one of the wires out of a piece of 3 core house wire and extended one of the cables running to the starter. Looped it through the firewall and into a nook between the transmission tunnel and the centre console. Didn't work the first time. Switch got real hot. Oh, the switch was a regular house light switch, just popped out of the plastic housing. Hmm I think I went through a few hours of trial and error - mostly error. Ended up going to Jaycar and buying a much heavier gauge wire. Worked a treat.

(1983) First car I had - XC GXL 302 auto. Didn't like the auto so teamed up with a mate and swapped the 351 manual from his XB van into the XC and the 302 went into the van (his missus couldn't drive a manual)
One day I blew the snotter out of the single rail and got a top loader fitted - no probs there but only found out when I sold the car (a very irate buyer of said car rang) and wanted to know who had smashed up the transmission tunnel?? The top loader had come with a hurst shifter, so, to make the linkages fit, whoever did the job smashed the floor up and once it all worked, hid it all by refitting the carpet and modifying the console to fit around the shifter. Hand on heart, I had to tell him that it was done before I left Melbourne to return to Adelaide - poor bloke had no come back at all!!

added stickers and chev badge to a commodore expecting power increase..... :P
But in all seriousness, worst mod was cutting springs to lower a vehicle. I did this to one of the first cars I owned. XE Spak. Because I couldn't afford new springs. Gave it that fully sick look. But rode like poo....

now i'm going out to buy 3M glue to do it right. also wanting more sound from an AU XR8 so fitted hotdogs and no balance pipe against the exhaust guys recommendations, went back the week after for a balance pipe, went in the week after that for new mufflers.
